Johnny's on
the right

And now, an only-slightly-fictional account of how I convinced JOHN ROMITA JR., the BEST penciler in comics (and all-around nice guy), to draw a bulldog chewing on a comic book:

RING

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIING

RIIIIIIIIIIIIIII—(click)

JRJR: Y’ello?

NATE: Johnny!

JRJR: Aw no.

NATE: You love talking to me.

JRJR: Yeah, I love it. Like I love payin’ my taxes.

NATE: That hurts.
Hey, you wanna do a cover?

JRJR: Sure!

(I should mention that Johnny does not say “sure” like it’s spelled. Phonetically, Johnny says “sure” pronounced “shoowah”)

NATE: Do you want to know what you’re drawing?

JRJR: Eh, why not.

He he he. Fluppy.

NATE: Ok, I want a bulldog chewing on a copy of WORLD WAR HULK #1.

JRJR:

NATE: Hello?

JRJR: A what?

NATE: Bulldog. A bulldog.

JRJR: You mean that pitchfork thing? (“pitchfawk”)

NATE: What pitchf—

JRJR: The big bulldog guy with the pitchfork on his head.

NATE: Lockjaw?

JRJR: Whatevah.

NATE: No, just a bulldog. Brown on top, with a white belly and spots on his face.

JRJR:

NATE: Do you need reference?

JRJR: For a bulldog?

NATE: …with spots on his face.

JRJR: This is a cover? (“cuvah”) This isn’t just for you?

NATE: Nah, it’s the cover for DAMAGE CONTROL #2.

JRJR: What’s…is that a comic?

What Johnny
Usually Draws

NATE: Yeah, it’s about the organization that cleans up the messes that super heroes make. They’re hired to clean up Manhattan after Hulk (or, let’s face it Johnny, YOU) broke everything.

JRJR: I see. So I’m drawin’ a bulldog.

NATE: With sp--

JRJR: With spots on his face. Name?

NATE: Hm?

JRJR: Does the bulldog have a name?

NATE: Fluppy.

JRJR: Fluppy?

NATE: What’s wrong with Fluppy?

JRJR: Is this a prank?

NATE: I would never do that to you, Johnny.

JRJR: What’s happened to my career?

NATE: Do you not wanna do the cover?

JRJR: No, I’ll do it. I just…I can’t…

NATE: Do it out of love.

JRJR: Love of what?

NATE: Love for me.

NATE: Hello?
Johnny?
I'm sorry, but did you just announce a Damage Control (mini-)series? I don't remember seeing that anywhere else.
