The making of the cover from hell: part 3
2007-07-20 14:04:38
Okay, by this point in the sketching process it's Sunday and I'm still at it.

12-Omega Red is driving me nuts, I can’t seem to find the pose, positioning or attitude that I need. Come on, Omega, where are you? Here’s a quick figure study that doesn’t work with the composition.

13- Here’s another. This one is kind of cool and similar to the other weirdly cropped figure. It has a lot of energy but doesn’t play well with the others, so this is a no go.

14- And one more. Again, some nice energy but what’s the point, his hands are cropped at odd places and that’s where his tentacles come from. I do however like the way his body moves across the page. I'll keep this in the back of my mind.

15-Okay, back to Wolvie, I like this doodle, a bit cliché, but I like it for this piece, maybe I can make it work.

16-I do another and tighten it up a bit. You can see where I’m playing with the positioning of the arm. While the lowered right arm is cool, I want this composition to be weighted differently. I want the top of the cover to be heavy and the bottom to be lighter. I also want the log to be at the bottom. While I like this direction for Wolvie, I hate that he’s not looking at the reader. That’s one of those important rules in cover drawing, when and if appropriate, have your cover character(s) engaging the reader and drawing them into the piece. One of the best ways to do that is to have them looking right at the viewer, right in the eyes to be exact. That alone makes the Wolvie drawing a reject.

More tomorrow!

See ya in the funnybooks,

Joe, please help a fan!
Hi; I'm a 37 year old fan; been collecting since 1978...

I wanted to tell you that even thought I am in a very tough situation financially, I manage to put the money aside to buy many of Marvel's books.

Sometimes that means I have to depart with chunks of my collection to fund new purchases, but that’s OK. This week I sold a bunch of older comics to buy the Eternals Omnibus. What a book! What a blast of nostalgia!

However when I opened my copy, I saw that the dust jacket had a tear (printing damage it seems).... I was devastated! As I bought this book in Toronto (I live in Montreal ) I now have no way of exchanging it (plus, the retailer would think I damaged it myself, which I positively did not!).

Is there anyway I can get a replacement dust jacket? I am so sad, I parted with some dear Hulk comics (Trimpe period) to buy this, but I’m stuck with a damaged copy, as I did not see the defect before I paid and left Toronto ….

Please help!!!!! I'm having a mini-depression each time I look at the book!

I hope that using he forums to air my plea is OK, I could not think of any other sure way of reaching someone that can truly make a difference for a fan!!!!!
