Stark Tower in 3-D
2007-03-06 16:24:33
I’ve just started to use a 3-D program called Sketchup over the last few months, building my own models and sometimes hiring some expert Sketchup model builders to help me along as the building can be very time consuming, depending upon complexity. Thinking about some future, practical uses for Sketchup (with respect to what we do for a living here in comics) I set about doing a bit of an experiment in order to demonstrate the possibilities and potential for myself of employing simple 3-D programs into the making of a comic book. As an artist I could certainly see the benefits, especially when it comes to time management and complex pages. I felt that building a model of Stark Tower would prove interesting, primarily because the Sentry Watchtower on the very top hasn’t been fully realized in the round. Ever notice how we artists have only been drawing it from one angle ;-)

The Tower was built by an amazing 3-D artist named Jason Christiansen, who managed to build in a few hours what would have taken me several days to do. The following is a little flyby of the building to give you guys a sense of what a fairly new landmark within the Marvel U. would look like in the round.

By the way, for anyone that’s interested, Sketchup is now available as a free download from Google. Their moto is “3-D for everyone,” and they really mean it. Within a few short minutes, anyone, even those not artistically inclined, can use it. Spend more time and you’ll find it addicting. And hey, if you get good enough, nothing says that you couldn’t design oh, lets say, something like the Baxter Building and maybe have it presented right here on Marvel.com.

Have fun!

See ya in the funnybooks,

This is cool
I wonder if something a bit like this could actually be employed in the making of comics to draw those pesky background scenes for busy artists. This, at the very least, if you paused it at any point, could be used as the pencils for the Watchtower, right?

Exactly. Mr. Gunpowder. I think thats kind of what Joe is saying.

In theory you could do the whole area around Stark Tower too. And the area around the Baxter building for future reference and/or use. Its a fascinating possibility and I feel a much better option than using photo-ref backgrounds.

Sketchup
That is pretty awesome. Are there plans to use this on all the Marvel Landmarks? Baxter Building, X Mansion, Atlantis, just to name a few.

Cool
Nice to see Stark Tower from all angles. You should have added pointless music though.

The Marvel Empire
Time to mount a House of Ideas takeover of Second Life, I think.

NICE!!!!
nice job. I have thesame question like webx_1976. would be cool if you can see that from the x-mansion, baxter building, etc. Is it possible to make it in a program that in time you will be able to "enter" the buildings?

looks amazing Joe
thanks for sharing this

It almost looks like something out of the Ult. Spiderman Video game. Does it work like auto cad or vectorworks in the rendering aspect?

That is cool as hell next U should do a 3-D Galactus

S-M MTV series?
If this was colored, it lookes really similar to the style they used in the Spider-Man MTV series, cell shaded and whatnot. Looks like if one could build some primary spots (X-mansion, baxter, parts of New York, etc.) this could really cut down on background imaging. Though then the comic would just look like characters plopped onto a background, as the artistic styles would be different.

Although this brings up an interesting use of 3-D objects to effectively project or look like 2-D. You might want to look into the process they use for South Park. Originally they used paper cut-outs, but as they progressed they now do the entire show in 3-D, but model it to look at 2-D as possible. It really neat stuff.

pure 3-d printed comics?
Now that I think about it, if one could get an artist to design levels, characters, and other various models. With the right coloring job, I think this type of comic book would be PERFECT for something like 'Spider-Man Loves Mary Jane'. It would probably fit the mood just right. You would set up shots however you wish, messing with whatever camera angle you want.

Granted, I don't think this method would work on most of the more mature, or serious books - but for marvel adventures type stuff, I think this would be a fantastic idea.
