Inside The House

Hey there, True Believer!

Are you ready for the next step in the ever-evolving world takeover by Mighty Marvel?

We've been working on this concept for some time now, behind the scenes and in the shadows. As the world becomes more and more electronically savvy, we here at "The House" have been making our plans to keep nudging the Marvel Universe along with it.

Back in the early sixties, Stan and company established a tradition. That tradition was something never quite seen before in the comics industry or any other faction of the business and entertainment world for that matter. It was the idea of inclusion, the "True Believer Experience," as I like to call it. Stan's Soapbox, his Bullpen page, F.O.O.M., the Merry Marvel Marching Society, all of these things served to make those of us who were reading Marvel Comics at the time part of the family. Stan wasn't a mysterious wizard behind the curtain, heck, he pulled away the curtain and showed you all the gears that were making things work. It was a revolution of remarkable proportions.

One of the things that we've worked very hard at over the last six years is bringing back that sense of family and community, the look behind the curtain.

Warts and all.

Marvel TV and these mini movies that we'll be doing over time will hopefully continue the traditions started way back in 1961. We'll be giving you a tour of Hallowed Halls as well as some in-depth looks at staff members. Heck, we even have footage from a brain storming session from the Marvel Creative Summit.

So, before I run off (got a scene to shoot), let me say that what is truly amazing about all of the stuff you'll be seeing on Marvel TV is that all of it has been done in house. From the filming to the editing to the music, every stitch of it is being put together by staffers, right here, at Marvel. So, let me take the opportunity to thank, everyone who has been working so hard to bring these things to frution, including John Dokes, Virginia Melendez, Jason Harvey, Jeff Suter and Ryan Penagos.

Hope you dig it and come back next week, I'm sure we'll have some more.

See ya in the funnybooks!

Nice!
Thanks, Joe! You're definitely working up something that brings me back to those old - before MY time - illustrations of a grinning Stan Lee and the Marvel Bullpen that looked as if everyone worked in the same room.

Now, if Spidey could just swing by, or Doctor Doom could show up and demand to get more air-time in the next FF movie...

Heroes for Hire #13
I have been reading your books since I was nine years old. Marvel characters like the X-Men and Spider-man feel like childhood friends to me. I have been consistently buying your products for 15 years, and must have spent hundreds of dollars on your products every year.

Now, I don’t think I want to anymore. Joe Quesada’s recent dismissive response (Newsarama, Joe Fridays, week 100) to the Heroes for Hire #13 cover by Sana Takeda has made it clear that Marvel does not value its female characters nor its female readers.

I love Colleen Wing, Misty Knight and Felicia Hardy. It’s female characters like them that kept me coming back to Marvel, because I always found strong women that I could look up to. But when I saw this cover, I was grossly offended by its pornographic imagery. It clearly takes a lot from a genre of erotic manga, and the glaring details such as Colleen’s suit being zipped down to her navel and the slime on Felicia’s breast simply add to how vulgar the art is. Worse, these tough women that I love so much look more like helpless victims than the strong women I know them to be.

Quesada’s comments that people like me were reading too much into the cover was extremely hurtful and dismissive. I am not reading anything into the cover, I am looking at the art that is right there in front of me and find it vulgar and inappropriate.

I know that you can do better. Marvel has breathed life into wonderful female characters like Storm, Kitty Pryde, She-Hulk and Spider-girl. And I want young women of future generations to be able to enjoy reading about these characters as I have. I would hate it if a woman walked into a comic book store and was driven away by this cover.

But until I know that Marvel truly values my readership by not depicting its female characters with such inappropriate art, and will apologize instead of dismissing my opinions, I will not be buying Marvel products anymore.

I do hope that Marvel will start to value female readers like me. I truly do.

Sincerely,
Leslie Carroll

Re: Posted by CaribouGrins on 2007-05-28 12:5
Well...I gotta say I'm not with CarybouGrins on that one.
I mean, it doesn't matter which company is putting comics out, NONE of them shows woman like they truly are in the sense of reality.

Women in comics are showed as powerfull, strong, sexy, brave (just like men in comics too are presented the same way). Are any of these comic beauties real? No.
Is this a true vision of women in real life? No.
Should women be showned in comics the same way all the time as sexy, beautiful women in skimpy outfits? No.
will it ever stop? No.

It's comics man, it's not true. Sex sells, that's a fact. The cover itself isn't bad, it's just over exposed and will certainally not invite ANY women to join the pleasures of comics but still, it's just art.

Now, as far as the video of Marvel goes, I love the idea and can't wait to see the inside of Marvel....

Any possibilities of seeing Greg Pak soon since he's writting the Hulk??????

Hi, Joe - need to comment on that Heroes For
Hi Joe,

I'm terribly sorry to stray from the topic at hand, but I'm going to post a comment here regarding the Heroes For Hire #13 cover, since this is the best place I can think of to post something you *might actually read.*

I'm a True Believer, and I have been for thirty years. I spend upwards of $80 - $90 a month on Marvel titles and TPBs, or did, until Laundrygate. I've always been of the firm belief that out of the Big Two Marvel has been far, far ahead of DC in terms of being progressive on social issues and diversity in its published works, going all the way back to the 1970's, and I've defended my conviction about Marvel being my go to publisher for seeing better depictions of female characters and black characters thousands of times over the years.

But I need to express my distaste regarding the Heroes for Hire #13 cover, which we in fandom have dubbed Hentaigate. I've read your dismissive responses on Newsarama to fan outcry about this cover, with your "you're interrogating the cover from the wrong perspective, you dirty-minded *hysterical girl-creatures!" And frankly? That rankles me more than anything else you've said in recent years. See, I've spent a considerable amount of time defending various things you've said over the last few years that can be construed as terribly insensitive and/or dismissive of your female (and male) readership; I've tolerated your not infrequent subtext of dismissal and contempt for Marvel's readership when we point out that hey, this could possibly really be offensive to a chunk of your demographic, maybe you haven't considered this but might want to? I've chalked it up to you perhaps being unaware of how insulting you can present to the reading public at large. But no longer.

Here's why a ton of people in fandom hate this Heroes For Hire #13 cover: this cover takes two incredibly strong women, that being Misty Knight and Colleen Wing, characters that I've adored since I was *eight years old,* and puts them in overtly submissive and overtly sexualized positions, menaced by tentacles (and don't think we didn't notice that one tentacle dropping a *money shot* on Felicia's cleavage there). I mean, this is worse than the insinuated *@*%** that Medusa just gave Maximus in Silent War. Now, I don't think tentacle rape is going to happen in this issue of HFH; I learned long ago that what's on the cover of a comic rarely reflects what actually happens inside the comic. So, before you delve into "you dirty-minded girl" counter arguments, I want to make that clear.

But what I object to is the horrific portrayal of Misty and Colleen. I think we can all agree that thirty years of previous continuity with both of these characters means that I can draw the following conclusion safely: if Misty Knight were chained up and menaced by tentacled Brood, you can bet your life on the fact that she'd be snarling, spitting, and cussing a blue streak at those tentacles, kicking at them with all her might to her last breath.

*THAT'S* what people object to in this cover. The lack of spark, verve, and dynamism that usually characterizes Misty and Colleen.

Instead? We get this empty, vacuous portrayal of fearful!Misty and fearful!Colleen. Misty, who is a tough-as-nails ex-NYPD cop, who has faced down things much more perilous.

The other thing I object to is this: anyone with more than a cursory knowledge of Japanese printed comics - meaning manga and hentai - is going to recognize the common and stereotypical signifiers of hentai as reflected on this cover, and hentai, as you should know if you have a modicum of awareness about comics published in other countries, is a genre that often depicts helpless women being forced to do unspeakable acts with the forces of evil against their will, which frequently involves tentacle monsters. So, knowing this, Marvel decided to do a cover that anyone with a cursory cultural awareness of Japanese graphical literature is going to recognize as a clear reference to hentai?

What?

Contrast this with Khari Evans' marvelous work on the recent Daughters of the Dragon miniseries, in particular this image:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v372/orophinsgloss/Scans%20Daily/mistyandcolleen2.png

A cursory look at this picture and some things should jump out at you. Notice, first of all, the supreme confidence of both of these women; note the angle of Misty's chin, her confident stance, her direct gaze. Note how Colleen is a solid presence. Note how both of these women authoritatively OWN their personal space. It's sexy, it's hot, and it rocks.

There's a story in this picture; there's life, energy, and even if you know NOTHING about these characters, you can see just by looking at this picture that they have a past together, that they are friends, and that they are undoubtedly women to be reckoned with.

Compare that to the Heroes for Hentai cover, and you can see, perhaps, why people are upset? And it's not just women, Joe, that are upset. It's the passivity, the grossly improbably anatomy, the total lack of anything remotely resembling the characters we know and love.

I think it's very sad that Misty and Colleen got better treatment *in the 1970's* from Marvel.

If I want to look at freakishly huge-eyed helpless women with S-shaped spines in paroxysms of terror-cum-orgasmic pleasure at the sight of a few slimy hellbent-on-violation tentacles, I will go to Japan and/or start buying manga.

Again, lest you think it's just women that are upset, I refer to my recent blog entry, where over half the respondents were male:

http://kali921.livejournal.com/127259.html?nc=65

And, of course, the appearance of this cover on scans_daily, a comics discussion community in LiveJournal, which has the most active participants in the comics blogsphere by far compared to any other blogging service:

http://community.livejournal.com/scans_daily/3536573.html

And this:

http://liviapenn.livejournal.com/466141.html?nc=147

Again, lots of men weighing in.

I think you know you've screwed up when you manage to piss off Gail Simone:

http://www.606studios.com/bendisboard/showthread.php?t=114384&page=25

And finally, to switch to another subject, why no love at Marvel anymore for Misty and Danny as a couple anymore?

http://kali921.livejournal.com/126589.html?nc=64

With puzzlement and sadness,

Anne

a video game idea
To: Mr. Joe Quesada, Marvel Comics
Joe@joequesada.com

As a long time Marvel fan, I have a business proposal for your firm. I believe that if positioned better, you can raise comic book sales by targeting a growing target market while promoting yourself through additional media sources.
Sales and Market data illustrate that the same people who read comic books are the same people who enjoy playing video games but that this target market is loosing interest in both at an alarming rate. By saving one I feel Marvel can save both. The market ranges from ages 13 up to early 30’s which suggests that Marvel can have longevity with a slowly maturing audience.
I would be happy to stop by your office to meet you at any time that is convenient. My hope would be to help restore Marvel back to its glory days.
Currently, I work with my family's real estate business, am a senior at Baruch College, and have been a Marvel fan since the first pencil I picked up writing storylines and drawing renditions of Wolverine. From an early age I felt a need to be engaged in creative directing and would love to have a hand in producing new Marvel games/story lines tailored towards the next-generation of fans.
I would appreciate an appointment where we could talk about Marvel, your firms’ plans, and even a bit of my ideas and possibly a role for me with you. Perhaps I might also get to meet with Mark Millar and Michael Turner? I look forward to working with Marvel, believe it or not, with all my heart.

Cordially,

Abdullah Sikander

Odd . . . but Intriguing . . .
Erm, are you guys familiar with the phrase "So bad it's good"? All the kids are saying it nowadays.

I liked it. It's definitely a step forward, seeing the Marvel offices and writers we've all come to know and begrudgingly admire. Even if we all did sit watching and think "shouldn't those guys be working"?

I will say one thing. I don't mean this as a criticism -- in fact, if anything, it's a reason I like the "Inside The House" more -- but for guys who can write such AMAZING comic book dialogue, it's surprising how terrible the script is for "Inside The House #1".

The Sexism Subject
Put simply: so what? Being offended is natural and I'm not saying you shouldn't be if female characters in comics are being portrayed as sex symbols. Then again, they're also hard-as-nails and always will be in the minor comics, where the good guys prevail, the bad guys lose and everyone lives happily ever after because a good story has been told. And, now that I think about it, you're complaining about Misty Knight being afraid, or female figures being shown as weak? What hero hasn't? A hero is only as good as his (or her) villains, so infallibility is a no-no.

But you can be offended if you like. Although I didn't see any complaints on behalf of women when sexist television shows like Ally McBeal or Sex & The City were aired. Shows with a blatant disregard for political correctness and just decided to be offensive against an entire gender. It's all very well if women complain when a joke is offensive to women, but it doesn't make a difference if it's to men?

Besides, how would you want women to be portrayed alternatively? As being overweight and ugly? There'd be complaints for that too, about how women aren't being portrayed as the beautiful people that they are. Despite there being male heroes and villains that are unattractive, it has to be said that there are more male heroes and villains. And you have Big Bertha, so that's a start . . .
