I may be jumping the gun here... but I have scanned the excerpt without reading and the words Marvel Boy lead you to this website... http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=7475
so maybe the password is "Marvel Boy"
Posted by marvellad on 2006-06-28 11:35:34
Password, well maybe
Okay I think maybe I've got our password here, the rebus and the fact that five letters were faded gives me the missing word
SHOOT
Hope this helps.

I'm not sure about that...
I think that Nosybrat is on the trail.
But I think the password to tell the 'field agents' is "Aquaria".
And I think Jimmy Woo confirmed it in the text piece above:
"Shoot," said Jimmy. "I wish Namora were around."
And he goes on to explain that her real name is Aquaria.
The 'Marvel Boy' link takes you to an article. And in the article, it discussed that several of the team members have other names.
When clue hunting, I tend to look for connections. Things that get mentioned twice or more... 'Shoot' came up twice. And the real names thing came up twice. The connecting factor was Namora.
Also, Nosybrat, you had asked about our old friend and how he is getting along... I think he may have last been seen in the company of the Nick w/ all the initials. (You seem to be very good with initials yourself.) The previous time our friend showed up, I think he had a driving accident due to a Vision he saw.
I will go see a man about some books soon. I will say "Aquaria" to him to see what he has to say.
Best of luck to all,

Odd coincidence?
Doesn't it seem odd to you that Namora's real name is Aquaria Nautica Neptunia, and Venus has an enemy named 'Neptunia' as well?
For that matter, Venus (aka Aphrodite) as a 'sea' connection herself, as she is supposedly born from sea foam.
Interesting, eh?

No keys have been found. The trail is quite cold.
Posted by mr. lao on 2006-06-28 17:10:33
We are not even close..
I just checked w/ my book guy...None of those passwords worked.
...And I was so sure about Aquaria too...
I will go back to the source material and look further.

Interestingly, Mr. Lau said that "The Trail is quite cold," which, taken literally means that we ought to follow the "cold."
In the passage, Marvel Boy says: "Hey, what gives? That water's freezing" as Venus dives into the water. What does she find? An octopus. But not just an octopus, but as the text is written, "...She felt the Octopus Press against her leg..." [note capital letters]
I pulled up "Octopus Press" on Google, and found this site:
http://www.octopuspress.com/ "Dear John, The Alex Toth Doodlebook".
There is a linked picture on the bottom of the page, of an octopus tentacle. If you click on the picture, you get a mysterious red box. Clearly, someone has erased the text on the box... and, correct me if I'm wrong, but this looks like a splash box from the cover of a comic book. Can't find the source, however, so my doubts are doubling.

Astonishing 4
that panel oresteus posted is from Astonishing #4, one of the issues mentioned in the CBR article:
http://www.timely-atlas.comics.org/horror/astoni04.jpg
the panel reads:
"it was just an ordinary dungeon -- dark grim and filled with a ghostly silence. But Marvel Boy had to learn why it changed into -- THE SCREAMING TOMB'
I am guessing that Screaming Tomb is the keyword we are looking for

Skeletons loot san Diego closet!!
sounds familiar?
the article http://uk.comics.ign.com/articles/715/715218p1.html is instructing us to follow the words on Marvel Boy's covers...
Posted by doop1958 on 2006-06-28 20:38:11
the answer to the rebus:
this should have been obvious
the wall didn't read 'i gun commies'
five letters were faded out, what it really read was: ign.com!

another thought
Well I considered myself suitably chastened, I had followed the Octopus Press trail but couldn't make head or tails of the red box,
serves me right. sorry I wasn't more help. I'm throwing this out now while waiting for new developments, does there seem to be an
odd pattern forming with the keys? Maybe it's false pattern recognition on my part, but they seem to be going somewhere, maybe that will help inform our search, or lead us haring off into the gloaming, knowing my luck.
Courage!

key word?
Could the key word be ASTONISHING? I see skeletons on one old Marvel Boy cover, Astonishing #4.

Go find the final clue and you will be ready to go into the field. Except you, Doop- you have already advanced in rank. Do not hinder the training of others! You will now participate in a different way. Msr. Oresteus, good work on the octopus.

Doop's Clues
Hey Doop,
I checked out the CBR link from your previous post:
http://forums.comicbookresources.com/showthread.php?p=3303226#post3303226
And it doesn't say "remove the U" (at least it didn't when I got there). It says "It is number 6."
I would have thought that had something to do with which cover would have the correct clue in the box, but we have already found that to be Astonishing #4.
So is this a reference to the Sixth Member?
I cannot get to the other two links from work computer (blocked!).
http://uk.comics.ign.com/articles/715/715218p1.html
and www.ign.com. So I will have to try them from home...
So does the IGN.COM clue have information about the mysterious sixth member?
VERY good work, Mrs. Oresteus. Thank you very much.
And good work on the IGN.COM clue, Doop!

It is number 6
After reading the IGN article and seeing as how the robbers were pointing to specific words on covers and Mr. Lao's clue on CBR is "It is number 6," the sixth word on the Astonishing #4 red block is "dungeon."
This is what I believe is the key word: Dungeon.
The Beard

Regarding Agent Number 6
Given that she is widely referred to as the sixth member – even Leonard Kirk describes her as such with some cool sketches (http://leonardkirk.comicbloc.com/?p=37), and CBR reminds us in her profile that, “..In her last appearance Namora was confined to a frozen prison, but much of the world believes her dead..,” and there’s even a cool picture of her on the same page in an ice coffin with her cousin, (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=7597), could there be a connection with the “Screaming tomb” mystery in Astonishing #4, with the sixth member, and the strange occurrences in the sea as described in the passage?
Could our password simply be “Namora”?
Posted by msr.oresteus on 2006-06-29 15:55:43
Dungeon it is! Excellent, eyecolumbus!

The field
Has anyone taken it to 'the field' yet to see what additional clues it might reveal?
Posted by kuyu001 on 2006-06-29 17:39:50
great work everyone!
talk about pooling our resources!
unfortunately, all comics shops in my city are corporately owned chains, and they haven't received any missives. CBIA-affilliated comics shops are our best bet now.
Which are the agent ranks, mr Lao, sir?
Posted by doop1958 on 2006-06-29 18:09:06
Keyword: Uranus
I stopped by my local comic shop on the way home and tried out the password: "Dungeon" on the proprietor.
He responded w/ the keyword: "Uranus".
I think that Nosybrat may be on to something with a message or link hidden in all the keywords.
Let's compile that list and contemplate it.
Posted by KRB NRG on 2006-06-29 18:09:21
Indeed.
Where is this loyal agent of ours, KRB NRG?
Posted by mr. lao on 2006-06-29 18:34:26
Same Keyword
I asked my local shop keeper and he told me the same one.
URANUS
