The Amazing Spider-Mail!
2007-12-13 11:10:50
Greetings, the Internet! I’m Tom Brennan, assistant editor and all-purpose adherent on Amazing Spider-Man!

In the next few weeks we’ll be giving you a sneak peek of the upcoming Spidey-series – spotlights on the art teams, previews of upcoming issues and a few surprises along the way. But before we get to that, I’m here to talk to you about something extremely important: The Letters Page.

Now if you’re a guy like me (hey, *I’m* a guy like me!), you know there’s just simply not enough venues on the internet to voice your opinion. Well long before the internet had message boards, comic books had letters pages (some books still do – write us, Thunderbolts, Ghost Rider and She-Hulk Fans!). Since it’s a Brand New Day for Spidey, we’re running a Brand New letter’s page to go along with it! But we need your help!

That’s right, comic fans, for one time only, we *want* you to write us about a comic *before* you read it – we want you to be a part of our Brand New Day-Debut, so write your most Sensational, most Spectacular and most Amazing questions about the new run into Spideyoffice@marvel.com!

(And in case you’re wondering, yes, I tried to cram “Friendly Neighborhood” and “Web of…” into the above pun-a-palooza, but it just didn’t make any sense…)

Seriously, though, what do you think is going to happen in Brand New Day? Who are the new villains? How are they connected to Spidey? What new trials and tribulations will he face? Start writing, Fan Boys and Girls! We’ll post the best letters in our first couple of issues!

Of course, for those of you who NEED your questions answered right away, Steve Wacker (or as I call him, “guy who signs my timesheet”) is on a virtual media blitz – check out his interviews on Marvel.com, Newsarama and Comic Book Resources.

And later this week, the Wack-Attack hits IGN!

But one word of warning for any of our intrepid letter writers: since none of the editorial or art teams on Brand New Day worked on One More Day, none of us are in a position to answer any questions on OMD – so you can save those questions for the comic shop.

Besides, a Brand New Day calls for Brand New Questions, so send them into Spideyoffice@marvel.com!

-- T-Bren
So we can't even write to the Spider-Man letters page about the developments of One More Day? That's not how things used to happen! Oh well, guess we're lucky to be getting a letters page at all...

Brand New Day
I just hope that Marvel won't go with the stupidity of undoing the marriage. To do so would be insanity, it would take one of the best characters out there and turn him into a boring cliché who's not even a shadow of what he used to be.

It's one thing if they'd go with death or divorce, but to undo continuity like this is to take a peace of prime steak, put it through the blender, take out all the taste and turn it into babyfood.

That aside, I do hope that the new writers will at least have the sense to keep detective Lamont in use. I hate to see yet another great new character discarded as soon as the writer who came up with him leaves the book. It's just such a waste that so many writers throw away new characters, just because they didn't come up with them. I mean, just imagine if someone had done the same with Robbie Robertson or Harry Osborn, back in the day...

Well, yeah...
"So we can't even write to the Spider-Man letters page about the developments of One More Day?"
Well, yeah. One More Day was edited by another office. Those were the old guys. This office is editing Brand New Day. These are completely new guys.
Makes sense to me. After all, if you moved into a new house, you wouldn't want to read the last guy's mail. You'd forward it to him. You'd want to read your own mail, right?

It's not so bad.
Like he said, nobody working on this comic worked on One More Day. It's essentially like a new comic is starting and you're asking about an old one. It wouldn't be fair for them to answer someone else's work.

it's sad...
That they're getting all this new talent for "Brand New Day"... it's turning into a sins of the fathers kind of thing. I've already dropped all spider-man titles b/c this One More Day storyline just completely sucks. (apart from JoeQ's pencils, which are rad) While I'd like to maybe check out the new stuff, I've finally voted with my dollar as it were. Back in Black could have been awesome, but it wasn't. OMD could have been awesome, but it DEFINITELY isn't so far. It's just left a really bad taste in my mouth about Spider-Man, and I find it hard to stomach the thought of throwing more money at the character in hopes that it will finally be good again. Best of luck to the new creative teams. It's really too bad that Spidey's been in the dumpster for so long before you guys got the reigns.

not quite...
The reason for one more day I would think is to draw in sales. The way they handeled the story line could have been handeled better but the plot I think is needed to get Spidey out of this sapposed slump of writing

i'm excited about jrjr but...
here's the key to my pocketbook: john romita, jr. draws spider-man.

that said, i am nervous about the rumors that peter parker's life will be magically (or editorially) revamped. i love spidey. i love ultimate spidey. i love what-ifs. i love the fairy tales. i adored tangled web and spider-man unlimited.

but amazing spider-man is where i go to read the CONTINUING story of spider-man. i like that peter graduated from high school. i like that he married mary-jane. i disliked the clone sage (except for jrjr). i like that peter became a teacher. i like that aunt may found out that he was spider-man. i'm curious to see how the world reacts to discovery. i'll be sad if aunt may really dies but it hurts because it's real. it was bound to happen. i don't always like where spider-man's story goes, but i consider amazing spider-man to be the peter parker that i grew up with. i want to read that story without any do-overs or take-backs. because it's more real. even if we are talking about a book worm with spider-powers.

i'll be a spider-fan no matter what but there's my two cents.

Where's the love......
Listen guys, evryone's acting like this is the first time Spiderman has gone through a major change. We rolled with it then (clone saga) and we have to roll with it now. The fact that fans do not want to collect the title anymore because of a storyline is ridiculous. they've shown there true colors. Me ,personally, I would love if you guys can incorporate the secret identity back somehow. That's what's needed ,the balance between Peter Parker's personal life and the responsibility of Spiderman's legacy. I read that the supporting cast of Flash . Betty , J.J.J. and Robby are back in full swing. Perfect. If you could maybe touch on Spiderman's increased powers from the Other storyline would be cool too. But in closing the Civil War was the worst thing to happen to Spidey, not Mary Jane , not Aunt May supposed departures. Somehow get him in that mask with that secret identity back and I'll stop using Civil War #2 as a dart board. Also to all the fans jumping off the the Spidey train, don'y try to get on again because this creative team's train isn't going to stop. Live with it .

I agree that it makes sense not to have any take backs with the marriage of Peter and MJ. But it also makes sense that they eventually needed Aunt May to die. It's sad but needed.

Posted by marypeter on 2007-12-15 13:37:04
I'm not interested in getting back on the "Spidey train" that has ruined an incredible REAL story. People die. People have things they don't want known about them exposed. People make mistakes. They don't get wiped away. You learn from them and you feel like an ass, or like you want to crawl into a hole and never talk to anyone ever again, but you don't "sell" the ONE thing that will get you through it all. The ONE thing you know you can trust and has been right there with you, supporting you all along.

THAT'S why I'm "jumping off the Spidey train". Go ahead and ride to your little heart's content love. I'll go look for real content somewhere else.

In the wake of Peter reveling is identity (and looking at how low down the Kingpin is) this had to happen. I agree that Peter should not sell his marriage to save May because she will eventually die and he will need MJ to get through it. Did any one really think that a freaking mob boss would let someone who through him in jail live if he can? The writers had to give Peter some option about May living or dieing, but who here really thinks that the writers of Spider-Man are going to take away the most well known marriage in the Marvel Universe?

if you read the interview with Dan Slott then you'll see that in Brand New Day there are going to be cast change ups. The only other thing i have to tell you is to suck it up and take what you can get. A real fan sticks to their team through wins and losses. True we do not have any Stan Lee's writing any more but they do the best they can do. And don't you think people felt the same way when the writers of Amazing killed Gwen Stacy and her Dad? Changes have been made before and our Friendly Neighborhood Web slinger has survived if not triumphed during the acknowledged hard times.I mean it's Spidey right? He can never have a good time for long

What were you thinking?
Seriously, what were you thinking? I was a BIG Spidey fan all my life then the Spider-Clone saga came about and I stopped reading comics in disgust. I Re-discovered Spidey a few issues before JMS took over and I really got back into the title. I genuinely liked what JMS did on this title, except I took umbrage with the Gwen Stacy @#&&&& storyline, But One More Day was more than Pathetic! Spidey and MJ go together like Peanut Butter and Chocolate and after reading the latest AMS I’m really thinking of cancelling my subscription… again. This better be RetCon’d satisfactorily sooner rather than later, Otherwise I’ll take my refund and sink the money into Wonder Woman at the competition. What were you Thinking?!?!?!?!

It's just...
Dropping the marriage is definitely the low point for me. Seriously, how long can Aunt May hang around? She is old, and plus there could be new story-lines out there because of her death. Peter had one good thing in his life, Mary Jane. Sure, the writers tried to break them up dozens of times, but the two always stuck together. And I get how Spider-Man has the worst luck, that nothing good lasts for him. But to take away Mary Jane because the writers supposedly can't think of anything to write.. it just sounds lazy.

So really, in BND I would like to see Spider-Man and Mary Jane get back together, to undue this retcon either by them remembering their marriage or something. Thats number one on my wish list. #2, if Spider-Man still has his enhanced powers, I do want to see just how much they've been enhanced. Like how much stronger is his spider-sense, how much stronger and faster he is. Some new villians, like big time villians (like someone every one in the Marvel Universe would fear) to face off against Spider-Man would be cool.

But mainly, out of all that, I just want Peter and MJ married again. Like grimalkinmao said, people make mistakes. A bullet meant for Spider-Man hit Aunt May. Mistakes don't get wiped away, you live and learn and find support in the one thing that will get you through it. You don't sell it. Guilt aside, Aunt May should have died. Its gonna happen anyway. A lot of new stories could have come from it.

Good luck with BND. After the first few issues, I'll know if I want to keep reading.

Spiderman Is A Joke
One More Day has got to be the single most ridiculous series I've ever read. Who in their right mind would trade their marriage to save an over 70 year old AUNT??? Not mother....not sister....but AUNT!! I don't care how important she's been in his life, WE'RE TALKING ABOUT YOUR WIFE!!! Marvel never ceases to amaze me with the desire to keep useless characters around. Aunt May should've been dead long ago. She's not "Alfred" (who actually adds something to the Batman stories), but she a crutch and a burden....has been from the beginning! Now we are forced to stomach more Peter Parker coming of age stories!!!! Look Marvel eggheads, Mary Jane and Peter's marriage actually works! And the death of May adds a whole new dimension to the Spiderman character. I would've loved to see him go after the Kingpin! I would've loved to have seen the mean streak come out of him, as he goes after those responsible for her murder! I'd love to see the constant movement of him and MJ as they try to avoid Stark! Now, just like the "New and Improved straight from the cocoon" Spiderman and the new costumes, that angle has been scrapped! You guys are proceeding to absolutely destroy one of the greatest characters in comic history.......by the way, Spiderman 3 sucked too.

One More Day
Everyone know why Peter and MJ aren't married anymore. It's because Joe Quesada has never liked the idea of Spidey being married. Don't get me wrong, Joe Q is a brilliant artist, for my money i've never seen anyone draw a better Daredevil. But to destroy something that has been a part of comic continuity for over 20 years is ridiculous. Peter needs MJ, he needs his wife. He needs that one person in his life who is his rock, who he leans on and depends on and who knows all his secrets. At the end of OMD, they gave us a brief glimpse of what Peter's "new life" is going to be like. He's again living with May in her house, she doesn't seem to know that he's spidey anymore, Harry Osborne is alive???. maybe this is just some kind of flashback to show that yes Peter once dated MJ in this new continuity but they had a fight nad she took off never to return. I don't know. But I can't say I like what i've seen. Back in 1995, the clone saga angered a lot of fans. Honestly, I liked the character of Ben Reilly, I liked the Scarlet Spider and i even liked him as Spidey for a short while, but I never really accepted him as the "real" Peter Parker. I was glad that Marvel undid it, though I didn't like that they killed Ben, I was okay with them bringing Norman back, I hated that they killed off Peter and MJ's baby and I didn't like that they eventually brought back Aunt May...again. I have loved Spider-Man since I was very young but it just seems that Marvel refuses to let Spider-Man/Peter Parker grow up. Spidey has always been a character that the fans can grow and identify with on some level. Why does Marvel insist on continually trying to destroy him? He cannot and shouldn't live with his elderly aunt forever. Let him grow up. I'm not a fan of the ultimate books because all it does is mess with well developed and established continuity. But I understand the purpose of launching it to show Spidey to a new generation of fans who need to see Spidey closer to their age level. So Mr Quesada, if you want to see Spidey living the single life, read Ultimate Spider-Man, leave our Peter Parker alone. I noticed that they left a loop hole in OMD, saying that somewhere deep down, they'd always be aware of what they've lost, let's bring this into effect sooner rather than later. Anyways my purpose in writing this post was to mention that after a huge letter writing campaign, Marvel eventually reversed and undid the entire clone saga and did their best to never mention it again. So spidey fans, get to writing. Vote with your words and your dollars. Let's get to a point where Marvel will feel the need to reverse and undo this and never mention it again. On a side note, I love John Romita Jr's work, as far as I'm concerned he draws the best Spidey I have ever seen. Thanks for reading.

It was just a dream
Anyone remember the episode of Dallas where Victoria Principal wakes up and realizes that the entire previous season, including the death of Bobby, was a dream.

That's what Marvel did with One More Day.

Mephisto...?

Give me a break. That's the laziest Dias Ex Machina that I've seen in a long time. It just totally sucks.

There is one positive thing to come out of this though. My wife complained that I'm spending too much on comic books. Now I have a reason not to buy any more Spidey books.

Brand New Day.
One thing I am curious about is how the events of Civil War would even be remembered (See the brand new day two page info spread by J.R. Jr.) if this retcon takes us back to before Peter and MJ were married? I'm confused, but not ready to give up on Spidey...

Posted by RadioNinja on 2008-01-09 11:28:07
This is silly!
I realized that Spidey is an important character in the new status quo of Civil War. He is also integral in New Avengers. How do you carelessly explain this way becuase your uncomfortable with his marriage? You are ruining your continuity. Obviously he was a skrull so you can reverse what was a onward fall from grace that made for compelling reading. He's not a boyscout he's a character. Allow him to grow and breathe. Allow his life to change. Bringing him back to his status quo fifteen years ago is selfish and ridiculous. I wish the best for this new storyline. I won't be reading it though.
