More Numbers
2008-07-22 16:44:23
Had a problem with the video I was going to put up today, so instead let's look at some more vintage sales numbers.

This batch comes from a couple months later than the ones I posted yesterday, November 1998, and track a wider assortment of titles. By this point, the "Heroes Return" books had been running for about a year, and the Marvel Knights launch titles had begun to come out. The two Spider-Man books post so high here because this happened to have been the month where they relaunched with new #1 issues--typically, they were a little bit lower down the charts.

It's a pretty good field of numbers, comparable to what we're doing these days (and possibly just a hair better...)

1 Unc. X-Men 140111
2 X-Men 135585
3 Amazing Spidey 125871
4 Peter Parker 116545
5 Wolverine 106244
6 Avengers 101777
7 Daredevil 85668
8 Fantastic Four 84003
9 Capt. America 77267
10 Mutant X 76392
11 Avengers Forever 76189
12 Spidey Chapter One 75435
13 Webspinners 75338
14 Iron Man 72993
15 Thor 72757
16 Generation X 57623
17 Spider-Girl 56497
18 X-Force 56195
19 X-Men Liberators 53593
20 X-Man 52202
21 Iron Man/Cap Annual 51384
22 Thunderbolts 50570
23 Cable 50568
24 Cap Sentinel Of Liberty 50405
25 Inhumans 49301
26 Black Panther 49191
27 Cap/Citizen V Annual 48028
28 Punisher 47992
29 Hulk 47986
30 A-Next 46503
31 Slingers 46323
32 Deadpool 40226
33 J2 37416
34 Alpha Flight 36696
35 FF Fireworks 31632
36 Rampaging Hulk 28841
37 Heroes For Hire 27731
38 Warlock 21144
39 Union Jack 18787

More later.

Tom B
Union Jack got no love back then, either. I veto Jack haters.

Hulk then & then...
Wondering why Hulk dropped 25 places in sales between July and November? Well...

In July, Hulk featured the death of Betty Banner (nee Ross) by radiation poisoning, the work of the Abomination, we would find out.

In November, Hulk featured the Circus of crime and the notorious scene where Hulk is choked to unconsciousness by a snake, That's right, a normal snake.

I, for one, am not surprised.

The Hulk's slip
If I remember, the slip happened when Peter David was taken off the book.

Would editorial ever look at sales returns after a year and admit "OK we slipped up" and invite the author back on?

Just wondering...

Daredevil
Whoa! Look at them Daredevil numbers! It was nearly dead in the last post around 25,000, up to 85,000! That's 'cause of Kevin Smith & Joe Quesada.

Numbers?
Numbers do mean something. If they didnt you wouldnd waste to posts discussing how meaningless they are or how the information is incorrect. The fans that stopped buying your comics (like myself) may be lifeless but we are not stupid. Here you go some meaningless insignificant sales numbers that are all wrong.

2 Amazing Spider-Man 546 $3.99 Marvel 127,856
9 Amazing Spider-Man 547 $2.99 Marvel 101,132
10 Amazing Spider-Man 548 $2.99 Marvel 97,881
3 Amazing Spider-Man 549 $2.99 Marvel 101,048
9 Amazing Spider-Man 550 $2.99 Marvel 90,817
13 Amazing Spider-Man 551 $2.99 Marvel 88,029
4 Amazing Spider-Man 552 $2.99 Marvel 89,808
8 Amazing Spider-Man 553 $2.99 Marvel 82,624
14 Amazing Spider-Man 554 $2.99 Marvel 81,048
8 Amazing Spider-Man 555 $2.99 Marvel 86,885
14 Amazing Spider-Man 556 $2.99 Marvel 78,442
16 Amazing Spider-Man 557 $2.99 Marvel 77,041
20 Amazing Spider-Man 558 $2.99 Marvel 76,944
21 Amazing Spider-Man 559 $2.99 Marvel 74,184
23 Amazing Spider-Man 560 $2.99 Marvel 73,991
17 Amazing Spider-Man 561 $2.99 Marvel 72,345
19 Amazing Spider-Man 562 $2.99 Marvel 71,382
20 Amazing Spider-Man 563 $2.99 Marvel 70,766

The first number is the overall rank of the book in sales.(on a monthly basis)
The ending number is the amount of units sold to comic book stores.
