The Bible
2007-05-29 15:41:42

I've got another editorial meeting to go to over the next two days, so blogging will be temporarily suspended for that period. But before I jet, I wanted to point out a publication we've got coming out this Wednesday: the AMAZING SPIDER-MAN OMNIBUS. Or, as I've been calling it around the office, the Bible.

This volume collects the entirety of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's groundbreaking run on AMAZING SPIDER-MAN: 38 regular issues, two annuals, AMAZING FANTASY #15, the lead story from STRANGE TALES ANNUAL #2 and a short feature from FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #1. Plus assorted essays and extras of all shapes and sizes. About a thousand pages in all. This book is large enough and heavy enough to kill someone with.

These stories form the template from which the entire Marvel style of storytelling was derived. I've got a greater personal attachment to the Lee/Kirby FANTASTIC FOUR run, but even so, this is the quintessential Marvel achievement, the best thing Stan was ever involved in, probably the most influential issues Marvel ever put out. And the artwork looks terrific at the slightly larger size, newly-restored for the most part from earlier reprintings. The reproduction on AMAZING FANTASY #15 is especially nice. Likewise, the coloring throughout mirrors the original comics.

Sure, some of it feels the passage of time, and it's all a bit less sophisticated than the sort of fare that's being created today. Nevertheless, these stories still hold considerable charm, and are damned entertaining. And it's the perfect tome to work your way through while waiting this last week to see SPIDER-MAN 3 (Sam Raimi's interpretation of the web-slinger so very clearly is derived from the contents of these books.)

We've done a couple other cool OMNIBUS volumes already, and we'll continue to do more in the future, but really, this is the one book that just about every Marvel reader should own a copy of. And yes, I know it costs $100.00, and that's not easy to come by--but if you think about it as collecting 40 comics (plus!), then that really only works out to $2.50 an issue, which is cheaper than buying a stack of new comics!

Highest reccomendation.

More later.

So glad you said this...

Ditko really doesn't get his due. Kirby was Kirby, but Ditko was unique. I think that's one of the major reasons why you don't see many Ditko imitators... it's just not that easy to copy his style.

Wish someone could coax him out for one last hurrah.

Oh yesssss
I have been waiting for this and am salivating. AS Saber said above, Ditko is unique. Kirby was originally to be the artist on the book but Stan didn't like Jack's interpretation of his ideas and brought Ditko to the party - best move ever.
Just bought issue 38 of ASM on ebay (Ditko's last issue) and it's one of my favourite stories - Just A Guy Named Joe - it summed up all about Spider-man in that issue -- it was perfect and the ending even when he won he loses. Sums up the whole Spider-man vibe.
I would be the opposite of Tom and be more attached to Spidey than the FF even though I have the first FF omnibus and will get vol 2.
Spidey is THE greatest superhero comic book creation and deserves this omnibus edition and with, I hope, more to come.
I endorse Tom's recommendation. The omnibus editions are excellent and, I think, better than the masterworks...though not as portable ;-)

I've bought every Omnibus so far and I think this may well end up as my favourite. Can't wait to see it in a day or two.

can't wait too.
I agree with Sable , hoping that Steve Ditko will not be forget, I think that is Fantagraphics books who made a collector of his others stories in black and white ( not super-heroes but kind of twilight zone and third dimension ).

Very nice!
I read the first few dozen Spider-Man stories via a collection of small paperback reproductions that I've had for a few years. They definitely read today just as good as they must have read then. I think the most important thing about them, despite the antiquated 60s environment, is that you still care about Peter and feel terrible as he fights his way through school and various iconic villains.

I would absolutely consider picking up the omnibus! Thanks, Tom!

If I only spent 100 dollars on comics all year this omnibus is it.
Some of these issues (15-30) I have only ever seen in black and white. And the first 12 I have in color in paperback size.
These are the stories that hooked me on comics and had me buying comics in the late 80s. And I rushed to the comic shop today like I have't since I was 12.
Huge. And perfect.
Thanks Marvel!

I first saw
these stories in pocket book size and have the first 10 in masterwork format and the first 40 or so in Essential format.
The thought of this Omnibus is arousing me in ways that I thought only a woman could. ;-)

video game blog
What happened to the video game blog, with new Spider-man 3 game out you would think that there would be more informaiton on Marvel about the game.
On the boards there is not even a section for the Spider-man 3 game. This game looks very good, why is there no love for it?

ASM Omnibus
Has anyone noticed that the ASM Omni has neglected to include in the Marvel Tales reprint section Marvel Collectors' Item Classics #'s 1 and 2 which included ASM #'s 3 and 4? Wanna bet if there's a second printing, they'll be included?... ah, the curse of being an extreme completist...

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN OMNIBUS
Posted yesterday commenting on Marvel Collectors' Item Classics #'s 1 and 2 not being included in the ASM Omni's Marvel Tales reprint section of the book, as those issues contained reprints of ASM #'s 3 and 4... seems like my post was removed for some reason, as I don't see it here today, unless I'm looking in the wrong spot... but anyway, besides the glaring error of not including those issues in the Omni, I also discovered that the Omni wrongfully included Marvel Tales #2, which had NO ASM reprint within it's pages... Cory S. did a wonderful job in overseeing this project and it IS a beautiful piece of collected Spidey/Lee/Ditko classics, but just a little better research could have been done with the reprints, as well as with the positioning of the ASM covers on the pages within the Omni... some of the cover images are so extremely close to the top of the page, I thought I was going to find a cover or two with the top portion missing... fortuneately, it doesn't appear to have happened... at least with MY copy... my only other complaint is that because of the thickness of the Omni, depending on where in the book you're reading, it becomes difficult to read some of the issues and some of the letters pages, because it goes so deep into the gutter of the book... you almost have to press down each side of the open book to be able to read... hopefully, doing this won't result in pages popping out in the future, as I believe the Omni has a glued binding, and not a sewn one... speaking of which, why wasn't it done that way?... maybe due to the thickness of the Omni and the amount of material included, perhaps this project should have been done up as a 2-volume set within a slipcase... but then again, an Omnibus is usually considered as a single volume, so I guess that's the reasoning why Marvel did it the way they did... but all in all, all the above complaints are really minor ones... on the overall overview, this is one helluva beautiful book of the collected works of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko Spider-Man classics... THANK YOU SO MUCH and thank you for your time in giving me a listen...
