Spider-Man unmasks
There is currently a lot of debate on whether this was a good idea or not. I'm anxious too see how it all plays out.

Not thrilled
I must admit I'm not thrilled with Marvel. I don't mind the storyline, but I didn't want to know yet. I live 50 miles from my nearest comic shop, so I order my books online. Here it's ONE day after CW2 comes out and Marvel puts a HUGE spoiler on the front page of the site with no warnings. I would have liked to read it first. Maybe next time they should wait longer for everyone to get their hands on it before they give away key plot points.

Unmasking Spidey
That's the draw of the character, he's a super hero who's a really normal guy under the mask. Juggling responsibilities and making rent, while stomping villians and saving people. Now he's working with Tony Stark, doesn't pay rent, and just unmasked. Why are they going out of they're way to ruin the most popular character they have?

I'm gonna blow your minds...
Is Peter Parker Spider-Man...or is Spider-Man Peter Parker?! One for the ages, my friends.

Only Thing Worse
than a superhero getting married is a superhero who reveals their secret identity. I'm glad I stopped following Spider-man in the last few years, or I'd be really upset.

The REAL question...
Now that Spider-man is unmasked, will Spider-ham follow suit? The implications could be huge!
Posted by caney on 2006-06-15 21:18:25
Disapointed
This is probably the worst thing that marvel could have done to Spider-man. I been collecting from issue 250 straight good and bad. I'm done.

I believe it'll be all right. ^_^
Well I personally believe in Marvel. I mean lets face it, these guys have to love the characters as much as the fans, if not more so. Even though I am a teeny weeny bit apprehensive of what it is going to happen, I know if anything, it'll at least be interesting. I mean my heart already wanted to jump out when I thought he really was dying. I thought he had cancer or something. @_@;;;;;
Or maybe I'm being a little too hopeful..........whatever. I guess my point is that I'm not throwing the towel in yet. I don't think they are gonna run Spidey into the ground.

Don't believe your eyes...
I still think that it was Ben Reilly who offed the mask.

Unmasking
I'm looking foward to the implications of spidies reveal. I didn't think he'd do it. But now that he did I think it opens up the door for some interesting stories. Plus, Jameson's reaction was great!

I haven't been able to collect in about a year and a half and well I know i have alot of catching up to do on back issues. (But I am going to start again next month) but annnnnnnyways. I found out about The new costume through this site and i am terribly confused on what happened here...someone PLEASE fill me any. but About the current topic. I just found out about the whole unmasking and being classifed as WoMD and i am so confused...and irate...how in the world can Peter of all people who vehemently spoke against unvieling his secret indentity in regards of protecting his loved ones do this? It's Aunt May's fault. Peter was considering running and MJ said we'd go with, then May talked him out of it....."spider-man labled a criminal but I know my nephew isn't...prosecutors & judges don't wear masks...and so on." MJ agreed and Peter came out.

catching up....
read Amazing 532 for his reasoning to do unmask and the Road to Civil War issues show his growing relationship with Stark and unveiled the new costume (which is not permanent). The last few Marvel events are suppossed to have laid the groundwork for this story. That is the condensed version. As someone who is also plugging gaps the early Straczynski issues of Amazing are not cheap, even on eBay

Stark is Spider-Man's greatest villain
When did the Spider-Sense replace common sense?
Look how Spider-Man's been manipulated by Tony Stark.. Norman Osborn was never able to do that..
Posted by degaton on 2006-06-16 02:25:52
Excited!
I'm totally for this unmasking of Spiderman as a previous poster mentioned the possibilities this opens up for great story lines. Although the one thing I did not like about it was that it wasn't in his own book, in my opinion it should have happened there. Any way the whole Civil War storyline is shaping up to be a great story.

Might as well get out
It seems Marvel is going out of their way to ruin the 616 Spider-Man. They gave him organic web-shooters, they gave him stupid wrist spikes and a whole whack of other 'Totem' powers. Then ignoring those powers they slapped him in a suit that has to be one of the most pathetic designs since the spider armor. Now they have unmasked him. They seem to be systematically stripping him of everything that made him such an appealing character. He is clearly Tony's lackey and not someone who can think for himself these days. This Peter is written like a sap.
I have been collecting Spider-Man for over 25 years. I know good stories can be told without having to shake up the status quo ALL THE TIME. He's married ... Big Deal ... a good writer can tell good stories within a certain structure. Is it to hard to ask for artists and writers to follow a little continuity now and then. It is like no one has read a Spider-Man story before 1998.
I won't be dropping the title because eventually someone with sense will step in and fix things. I am actually begging for a retcon. Maybe that's what they want. Quesada was asked if the Ultimate Universe would ever become the Mainstream Universe ... to this he replied “No”. However, which Spider-Man is the better character right now. The Ultimate Spider-Man has web-shooters, original suit, no dorky powers, spider-sense, continuity and good stories. The 616 Spider-Man has none of that. Go figure.

Now i'm all up for the evolution of the marvel universe but come on....spidey unmasked to the public? What is that all about.... I'm a big fan of the old skool spidey...all this new stuff isn't doing it for me at all. Bring back the clone years....bring back the Goblin years....BRING BACK THE CLASICS!

Unmasking
I was incredibly dissappointed in the unmasking. Mark Millar is a great writer, but so far CW is a cold war at best. The unmasking had no emotional effect, because there was no build up. Spider Man was barely in the issue. JJJ had more lines than he did. Plus the whole thing reaks of editorial mandates, setting up the next Spidey event Quesada's been talking about. How long before the whole thing goes the way of the clone saga?
Posted by Geist0 on 2006-06-16 09:23:39
why not?
Here's my take, we've had secret identity Spiderman since John F Kennedy was in office. Think about that. Let's ride with another option here and see where it goes. I agree that continually making drastic changes to characters is lazy writing, but in this case it makes sense from a story perspective. Think about it from Parker's view. To keep his ID secret means he loses everything again, and this time he just has too much to lose. He is making an adult decision because he isn't a 16 year old anymore. I am still looking forward to somewhere around CW5 when he will tell Stark to get off the bus, chunk the iron suit and go back to being a free-wheeling spiderman on Cap's side. (Prediction, takers anyone?)

Do something...
You've been setting this up a few issues back now. When you guys actually pulled that mask off, I cursed out loud. I was really disappointed. This completely goes against Peter's character. What's going to happen to the unique relationship that Peter and Norman had, now that every C-list super villain and their mothers know Spidey's true identity. You've taken a bold (and probably stupid) move Marvel, but lets see what you can do with it.

Prelude to Civil War
While part of me thought Parker would ever take the mask off (had ideas of how Tony would control the new spidy suit to do it but would fail since Peter was wearin' the old one) I belive that (1) what he did was an adult decision and (2) Mark Millar is a great writer, and can make this work. I've read books where half the time I'm thinking "What the !@#$!!!" and then in the last part of the book it comes together wonderfully and couldn't be any better.
Now Pete, the first one to post, who said, "i don't see how this relates to the x-men." The X titles have been decades of leading up to Civil War (and Spidy's unmasking). I've been reading Uncanny since #177 and always wondered, "Why does the goverment pick only on mutents (and the hulk i guess)?" I mean really what made the late Doug Ramsey (they haven't brought him back yet? right?) of the New Mutants more threating than Johnny Storm? Anyways I'm running on....so shutting up now.

Hmmm
At first I was a little dissapointed with Spider-Man for unmasking himself, but before I pass judgment I want to see where Marvel takes this. I mean, like some of you other guys have said, Spider-Man has been masked since the beginning. Now let's see him unmasked and how things work out for him.

About Time
I have been a Spiderman reader for decades, I have almost every issue ever printed. I for one am not interested in "the classiscs" of Peter being some "lovable 16 year old looser who can't get a date". I grew out of that stage ages ago, and I'm glad Peter did as well, if a superhero doesn't grow and expand they will die.
Spidergirl was a great read and I loved the characters, it was very retro spiderman considering many of the same situations May faced, Peter did as well. However, we can tell by it's constant struggle to stay afloat that the majority of fans didn't like it. The newer Ultimate line works because it's cutting edge in the now of 2006, not 1966.
I'm 38, all the fans in my area are that age as well. We are far more interested in character growth than "same ol same ol". Peter getting married, working for Stark, unmasking..this is growth. Like the story before..Evolve or die. If spiderman becomes a retro version of writers trying to bring back thier childhoods, the character will fade away.
Trying to reach 12 year olds in today's market is silly. You don't have comics on the supermarket shelves anymore. You have to order them around here and few 12 year olds can afford them anyway. Children of the current readers are your future buyers, not phantom children who are playing Xbox.
The entire Cival war scenario makes brilliant and perfect sense. No government, real or comic, would allow unknown vigilante's with superpowers to do what ever when ever. I realize we like superhero fantasy, but even fantasy has to be moored in reality or it looses believability, and believability is what makes people come back. They believe that world so enjoy visiting it.
Peter unmasking was in deed directly from Aunt May who used what always worked on Peter. "With great power, comes great responsability". 600 children are dead, it's high time high flying vigilante's like Spiderman puplically owned up to thier actions.
Supervillians getting revenge and the like? Those are part of the risks when you do civil duty, don't be a hero if you can't take the pressure. Aunt may is right, Peter isn't 16 anymore, he's a adult in an adult world with adult rules.
In the ultimate line half the superhero and super villian community knows who Peter is, bout the only one who doesn't yet is J.J.J. and Aunt May. You saw how Silver Sable reacted when they tried to tag Peter and found out he was on "the list".
Supervilians won't just automatically go after Peter's family, there are certain codes even they don't cross, after all many of them have family too. (What's good for the Goose is good for the Gander) Besides, doing things to family members can get the death sentence, not just jail time. Provided they ever made it to jail, it is shield we are talking about here.

Good Job marvel!
The classic Spider-man is great but it is time for Peter and Spidey to grow up. And I see this as a great way to do it. I think it is great Peter is learning from Tony and hopefully this will lead to a great future for Peter, I just hope Peter is able to go off and become his own man and take what he learns from Tony and start his own business and Become a great Leader for Marvel, Spidey has always been by himself and now I think he is learning and is going to be built into a great leader. At least I hope that is where this all takes him. Peter is smart and just needs to find out a way to learn how to start his own thing in the future. I really enjoy what is going on in Marvel, and can't wait to see the future for Spidey and Peter. Now that he is working with the Goverment he will be on there good side and hopefully is able to figure out Tony is not that great and can go become his own man. I would really like to see Spiderman able build a super suit in the future and become a leader of great team of super hero's. Maybe start his own school or something, Peter is just so smart and Spidey is the best out there now it is time for him to grow up into something great.

Joey Q officially sucks!
Unmasking Spider-man is pretty lame, I've lost all confidence in Joey Q and his big talk of putting the genie back in the bottle is a load of crap.
Spider-man fans have had to sit through crap like SinsPast, The Other, Totem God, Iron Spidey and now this unmasking business. It's like the Clone Saga all over again.
Not feeling this at all.

Spider Man should have never been unmasked! I too think this is lame. What were they thinking? Now everyone will be coming after him! What the hell!?! That's just not right. They can redeem themselves by having Spider Man go through a tough streak.

good idea.. cause it give us a whole new take on parker and how he'll deal with even more heat at his door, its not like ppl already didn't know of his true identity.. on the other note.... bad idea.. cause this is good ole spidey how much has he already lost and how many times does he have to get shafted.. why don't we just kill him off slowly with some sort of virus.. his secret should have never became public.. he sold his sole to stark that bloody fool..
but all in all i love where this might take the story and his charcter

Utter garbage.
If the government was going to create a superhero registration, don't you think they would have done it during/after: Secret Wars II, Inferno, Disassembled, frickin ONSLAUGHT, which were all devastating events caused by superhumans.
A) Spider-Man would not unmask because Aunt May told him it was alright. His concern for those women would have run a bit deeper than buying into their stalwart act
B) Spider-Man would not run. Where would he go? And besides, being branded a criminal is the defining point of about...twenty-five years of his history. I mean, cops used to shot at him on site.
C) Peter has been portrayed way out of character as of late. He's a genious and has survived as many battles as any avenger has, not to mention he's what.....30 or so in comic book age? So why is a brilliant scientist and proven warrior following around stark like a puppydog?
The waldo arms and new suit just stank. Okay, he ran out of costumes. If memory serves me correctly, he sewed his first suit himself overnight. On other occasions he's purchase spiderman costumes from the store.
And the most glaring of all is his interaction and friendship with the superhero costume designer guy. While we're on the subject, did Peter not state to the old man that he did not want to change his costume design?
The whole totem thing: Spider-Man was changed, died and reborn during the awful 'wasp' storyline that guest starred Captain America (which, by the way, Spiderman would sign up with over Iron Man any day of the week).....he got new powers.
He dies and gets reborn...again? For entirely different reasons, I might add. And gets new powers...again?
Then, when he needs it the LEAST, he receives a new suit with...you guessed it: New powers!
Now, as far as the 'shedding skin' bit. I believe Spidey's been in a few worse scrapes than the one that 'killed' him.
Spider-Man died in an old issue where he fell off a building or some such nonsense, I forget which issue exactly, and was resurrected by Thanos and Death. Why not have him pop out of a coccoon then? Why could Death herself not detect that?
Alright, I've been longwinded enough. In short (because this post has been nothing resembling short), Peter is acting far out of character. Never would he back the registration. I love Marvel, but you fellas need a vacation and some fresh blood in the mix.
Here's an idea: Why not allow for a fan-submission to be entered into canon? Make a contest out of it. HINT HINT.
Posted by TheDeacon on 2006-06-21 03:46:08
oh and for the record:
I know the new costume is temporary, but I mostly like it. Change the eyes to white and add some webs and you got yourself a deal.
I may have been the only person that also liked the Ben Reilly spidey suit as well :p Change is good, as long as it's done correctly.
When I said the new suit and waldo arms 'stank', I wasn't referring to the actual design, but rather the fact that they were given to Peter.
Consider that Peter created web shooters and fluid strong enough to lift cars when he was a teenager and consider that his clone (with the same level of intellect) created impact webbing (good idea btw) and the spikey things he used to shoot out (another good idea).
Peter has also designed Spider tracers and the silly Spidey-light on his belt that he never uses anymore.
My point? If Peter wanted extra arms, he damn well would have made them himself.
Hmmph, perhaps he even could have gotten notes from Doc Ock, whose arms are also considerably better than the ones designed by Stark. Interesting...

The purpose of this decision
Up until Spiderman unmasked himself, I felt there was a clear right side and wrong side of the Civil War. Captain America was right, Iron Man was wrong. Judging from the poll on marvel.com's frontpage, I think most would agree. But with Spiderman's status in the Marvel Universe as one of -if not the- most popular charcters, his Pro-Registration stance gives a lot of legitmacy to that side's argument. Spiderman's actions carry a lot of weight in the world of comics, so much so that I found myself wondering which side is truly justified. The unmasking has and will continue to stir debate, but from a writer's standpoint the decision is brilliant storytelling.

Parker is Spidey?
No way?!!!! Oh well, so much for the big secret. Aslong as there's good stories to be told then, fine by me.

The brewing concern over "Peter parker is Spi
I had a early post where I mentioned no government would allow masked "vigilaties" to go around doing what ever they wanted. It's just bad governement to let stuff like that go on. The issue has been something of a key elament for Mutants for years so it isn't something new. It just became all encompasseing when people realized after the school was toasted that all super powered beings can be dangerous.
Can Peter survive being "outed"? That's a good question, and one that will be answered during the weeks that follow I'm sure. Concerning the idea that Spiderman has been viewed as a criminal his entire life and police have shot on him on site therefore he shouldn't be unmasked, missed the point of registration. Spiderman would be seen as a super villian and chased down accordingly by other supers with government aid and equipment. We are not talking a couple potshots by police, he would be actively hunted by government agencies and registered hero groups.
The other issue mentioned, is that the new suit with all it's gadets would have been made by Pete if he had wanted them to begin with. Not entirely, Peter likes many of the options the new suit has and uses them accordingly, he couldn't have made such equipment before because he lacked the resources. You can't buy much high tech equipment takeing photos for JJJ. Stark on the other hand, has no such problem.
As for Peter being starstruck by Stark...why not? I would be starstruck if I was with Mel Gibson or something, age doesn't define your response to someone who you would consider famous.Working for someone who you have hero worshiped as a kid would make one pretty giddy, haveing him put you and your family up in his tower would be even more thrilling.
I think folks seeing Peter unmasked makes them nervous because of the huge list of people he has "pissed off" over the
years. This is a conundrum true, but one has to realize that his secret wouldn't stay that way for long, sooner or later a bad guy will just knock him out and take his mask off. We don't live in the 60's and 70's anymore, supervillans aren't idiots, they would actively seek out who these "hero bozo's" are.
Many Villians allready know there is some conection to Parker and Spiderman just because of all the photo's. Some of these guys are geniuses, they would have figured who he was years ago. It's like DC and there Superman bit. Glasses= Clark...no glasses= Superman.......glasses=Clark.....no glasses= Superman. Hello? Like that is going to fool anyone. I'm me wether I have glasses or not and every one knows it, I'm recognized 100 feet away reguardless.
Power upgrades, well lets face it, being an avenger puts Pete in some big fights with major players. Haveing a higher power base makes sense. This totem idea has been going for 3 years or more now and I like it, besides Pete has always had a strange affinity for magic even back in the early days. Madaam Web, Doc stange, even Blackcat at one time had magic power.
Embraceing the spider will make him darker, more menacing, spiders are predators afterall. It will make for some interesting stories, haveing some idiot old villian trying to get revenge on a guy who embraces everything the spider has to offer. It should make for some good reads.

I didn't like this idea, it is horrible charactization, spidey learned not to let his enimes know who he is after gwen stacey was killed, you figure he wouldn't unmask himself, this is just like wipe out all of the mutants except 198, i agree with shrinking the mutant population but 198, maybe 75-80% percent of the mutant poplulation but not 99 percent of it
