Your questions answered

I only got a handful of questions so far, but thank you for your response! So why waste time with an unnecessary introduction, on with the answers!

Julio_p_83 writes “How do you guy's figure out which books to put in trade? Is it by earning potential or popularity or what? I just thought it's be good insight as to how things get done.” Well, I asked Vice President of Sales David Gabriel, and he says ALL OF THE ABOVE (emphasis his) plus potential for movie tie-in or other new project tie-in. For example, as X3 was coming out, we hit the ground running, releasing a shiny new X-Men: Mutant Genesis Trade alongside the Uncanny X-Men Omnibus! Double trouble, yeah! Now, there’s no New Avengers movie coming out any time soon (although I’m sure you’re just as excited as I am at the prospect of an Iron Man flick), New Avengers is one of our top sellers, so we’re going to give the proper collected format attention it deserves.

DrObviousSo writes “Where do you get the bonus material like the intros? Is this paid work, or is there a lot of arm twisting, beer IOU's, and compromising pictures sent to significant others.” Well, Doc, nothing so unsavory. A lot of stuff goes into making the monthly books. And luckily our forward thinking editors look to save as much interesting material as possible, like character sketches, pencils, pitches and scripts. They’re more than happy to pass those things onto us when we need them. That said, you would not believe the amount of compromising photos I have in my possession.

Tarhaun writes ”i 've been posting this all over the message boreads and i wanna ask u guys does the lead singer of evenesence look like spider woman.” To this I say: What? Are you planning on photoshopping a Jessica Drew costume over a pic of Amy Lee? Because A)That's a bit disturbing, dude, and B)There's tons of websites out there that have that done already. I know, I found them all.

I like to end my blogs with a bit of an "uh?" feeling. Keep those questions coming, people!

-mike

One more
In Tom Brevoort's simulation game, we all learned about all the crazy things editors for the monthly books go through. What kind of new and zany wrinkles do editors for trades have that monthly editors don't?

So what Omnibuses are we getting next year? ;)

Q
Any chance we'll see something more along the lines of page by page director's/writer's commentary in the back of trades? I bet there are at least a few writers who would be game for such a thing.

Cable & Deadpool
Is there any chance that we will be seeing a reprint of the frist 2 volumes of Cable/Deadpool?

Upcoming trades?
Hi,

I see there is a StarBrand Classic V1 trade coming in December. Does this mean we might see a D.P.7 TPB soon? They were one of the best New Universe comics!

Also, any word on New Mutants Classic V2? Or possibly a New Mutants Classic Omnibus?

The Original Miss Fury
Hello. Is it possible that some day we will see a Marvel Masterworks volume reprinting the 8-issue Miss Fury miniseries from the 1940s? Does Marvel still own the rights to the character? If not, might Marvel pay the requisite fee to do do the reprints? -Ed, a devotee of the original Miss Fury

Trades
Why doesn't marvel post ads in trades like in regular issues so as to lower the cost and make them more affordable?

ADS
#1. We used to put ads in, but it doesn't work the same as it does with the issues and it would not lower the cost of the book. (Don't ask me the hows and whys, I have no idea.)

#2. MOST people HATED that we had ads in the books! You are the first person I've EVER heard that WANTS them. Interesting!

About this blog:
The misadventures and weird happenings of the loudest office at Marvel Comics, the trades department.

About the author:
Jennifer Grünwald (who yells a lot), Mike Short (who’s on the receiving end of much of Jen’s yelling), Mark D. Beazley (who tries to drown out Jen’s yelling with his rather odd tastes in music that probably annoy his fellow officemates) & Jeff Youngquist (who’s waaaaay too busy for you people) in the Trades Department bring you all your favorite Hardcovers, Trade Paperbacks & Digests along with Handbooks, Director’s Cuts, Marvel Spotlight, Milestones, Flip Magazines and pretty much EVERYTHING else outside of the monthlies (we’re very busy)! Let's talk.
