SPANISH ARTIST ANNOUNCED AS LATEST EDITION TO MARVEL EXCLUSIVES!
Spanish native Juan Santa Cruz has signed an exclusive contract with Marvel Comics, where he will continue to work on the House of Ideas diverse stable of heroes, villains, and situations.
"I'm very happy to have the opportunity to work with characters I've grown up with and that I love a lot," remarks the artist, when asked how the news of his exclusive deal first impacted him. "Aside of the calm that gives you having a few years of work assured." he adds with a smile.
Santa Cruz established his comic book career at home in Spain with such unique projects as Black Hacker and Zeta, works that are most likely unfamiliar to American fans. He later went on to contribute art to DC's Twilight Experiment and Wildstorm's Resistance (both alongside popular comic book duo Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray). Marvel fans may recognize Santa Cruz's particular style from CABLE and PETER PARKER, THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN ANNUAL.
The man himself has a few works that he's personally proud of. "That would be the work I did for MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #4 and the two issues I pencilled for Majestic, #5 and #6. Plus the album I did for France, Les Legions de Fer (by French publisher Soleil)."
Is there any Marvel characters or specific creators a Cruz would be the first in line to work on or with? "The truth is that I like almost all of Marvel's characters, but maybe my preferred ones would be Wolverine, Spider-Man, The Hulk and Thanos. Thanos especially if written by Jim Starlin, because I love his comic stories of that kind."
"Juan has a great, distinctive style, methinks," says Joe Quesada, Marvel Editor-in-Chief. "His art is suited to a lot of very different characters and settings. Gonna be fun to pick out some projects for him!"
Santa Cruz's future, both immediate and long-range, looks bright. "I just finished a short story starring the New Universe's KICKERS INC. (which can be seen in New Avenegrs #16), and am now starting to pencil MARVEL ADVENTURES FANTASTIC FOUR #12."
"After that," he notes with a creative gleam in his eye, "All in life is a mystery... "
