When Scarlet Witch went over the edge and created the world of HOUSE OF M, she granted Marvel heroes what they desired most in the artificial reality. In the case of Logan--the X-Man known as Wolverine--she restored the memories that had been lost over the course of his long and battle hardened life. Now that he knows who has wronged him over the years, he is out for revenge and the bodies are piling up.
Wolvie's path of destruction was cut short when Emma Frost revealed to him that he had more important things to worry about: saving his long lost son. His son, Daken, is a killing machine much like his father. Also like his father, he is being controlled by outside forces, driven to acts of violence and murder. A highly trained fighter with claws and a healing factor similar to Wolverine's, Logan Jr. is pretty formidable himself.
It may seem strange that the Wolvie we know and love has a son, but writer Daniel Way says to get used to it. "There is much more to Daken than meets the eye…and yes, he's here to stay," he confirms. "Since he inherited his father's mutant healing factor, it's kind of unavoidable. However, the healing factor and the claws are where the similarities end. Daken is very much an equal and opposite force when compared to Wolverine. Whereas Wolverine has a heightened sense of smell, Daken has the ability to completely mask his scent. Whereas Wolverine has a heightened sense of hearing, Daken--due to his frighteningly intense training--can move in almost complete silence. And when it comes to hand-to-hand combat…well, we've seen that Daken is more than capable in that arena. The most important thing, though, when it comes to Daken's effectiveness as a fighter, is that he--unlike his father--has dedicated himself to maintaining complete control over his anger. Now, this doesn't mean that he doesn't have a temper--he is, after all, the son of Wolverine--but he keeps it bottled up, deep inside. Someday, yes; it will get out. And when that happens…well, a LOT of things will happen."
Changing his mission from revenge to rescue, Logan is on the hunt for a device than can weaken Daken's healing factor enough to take him down but not kill him--the carbonadium synthesizer. With this, Logan may be able to break the deadly cycle than he went through and now his son is seemingly falling victim to. Before could use it, however, he found himself up against a familiar face long thought dead--Cyber! Another mutant with a healing factor and adamantium upgrades, Cyber was eaten alive by insects in the pages of WOLVERINE. Suffice to say, it was quite a surprise to see him pop up.
Daniel Way says that it's only natural. "Since ORIGINS deals with Wolverine's past, Cyber simply had to make an appearance," he quips. "Luckily for me--and for fans of the character--there were developments in previous continuity that allowed for the return of the character from a, quite frankly, SPECTACULAR death. I mean, you don't get much more dead than having all of your flesh consumed by thousands of beetles, leaving only an empty husk of inorganic material behind. More specifically, Cyber played a critical role in the evolution of Wolverine, making him harder and meaner—I'd compare it to forging iron, heating and cooling it, beating it mercilessly into a desired shape. Now, we've known for a long time that Cyber was, at some point in the past, a 'teacher' (of sorts) to Logan…now we're going to find out what, exactly he was teaching him."
With the players in place, the race to save Daken is on. Whupping both Logan and Cyber into pulp in WOLVERINE: ORIGINS #14, Daken fled. Wounded and lost, Wolvie decided to put the grudge on hold and use what Cyber knows to get to Daken. All he has to do is not kill him for a while. "We've seen, earlier in the arc, that Cyber--long after his time as Logan's trainer--fell out of favor with the mysterious 'puppet master' (or 'masters') behind this huge shadow conspiracy," explains Way. "That's why Cyber ended up getting his flesh eaten. Now that he's back, he has a mission goal very similar to Logan's; that being to kill whomever it was who was behind all of this madness. But again, just like Logan, Cyber doesn't know--was never told--WHO was behind it all. However, he does have information that Logan doesn't--but is it worth the price?"
Now more determined than ever, Logan is more than prepared to cut a few folks up to save his son and have his revenge, even if that means befriending someone he hates. As the series goes on we'll see more bits of Logan's past from across the years, and we'll be putting the clues together right along with him. Way tells us that there are some juicy flashbacks coming up, including one that fans have been clamoring for. "The next arc, 'Our War,' is easily one of the most requested stories yet to be told: Wolverine and Captain America's shared history during WWII. Really, what more needs to be said? Wait--I screwed that up. 'Nuff said" he affirms.
