TGIF: Hulk's Smash Hits
The Hulk’s greatest smackdowns, as selected by the emerald experts at Marvel

The very first
Hulk vs Thing
showdown

WORLD WAR HULK may have smashed its way to an explosive conclusion this week, but the Aftersmash has just begun with projects like HULK, INCREDIBLE HERC and SKAAR: SON OF HULK set to continue the wave of power the Green Goliath has been riding over the past year.

In preparation for the brawls and beatdowns we're all expecting to come in the new year, Marvel.com gathered some of the Hulk's upcoming creators as well as the fighting mad TGIF all-stars of Marvel editorial to look back at their favorite Hulk battles from over the years.

It's Friday, so kick back, relax and enjoy.

JEPH LOEB (upcoming writer of HULK): The first one is always the best! FANTASTIC FOUR [volume one] #25 and #26—everybody got into it—the FF, the

Avengers and this great scene on a building with steel girders getting tossed around. [Jack] Kirby just tearing it up! Plus, it'd never happened before, so you didn't know who was the strongest there was!

TOM BRENNAN (Marvel assistant editor): Hulk vs Onslaught from ONSLAUGHT: MARVEL UNIVERSE. After months of this all-powerful Onslaught jerk running around, beating up on all of our favorite heroes, thrashing Manhattan—where I was born and raised, so it's particularly grating every time someone destroys it—in comes the Hulk to just break his armored butt wide open. Sure, that solution ends up causing more problems than it solves, but still—it's part of the "BREAKIN' STUFF" quality that makes me love the Hulk ever so much.

BILL ROSEMANN (Marvel editor): Maybe it was because of the Treasury Edition size, maybe it was the gorgeous art by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez, maybe it was the

intelligently choreographed fight, or maybe it was just seeing two of my favorite characters colliding…but HULK/BATMAN blew my mind.

KOI PHAM (artist of INCREDIBLE HERC): I'm gonna go with Hulk vs the Ultimates.

LAUREN SANKOVITCH (Marvel assistant editor): I thoroughly enjoy pretty much anytime Hulk and Namor duke it out. "Fish man smell like tuna! Hulk hate tuna!" It's the King versus Kong and Namor's vicious verbal rejoinders never fail to fall on unappreciative ears. Those two get me giggling every time.

Nobody needs a
big gun less
than the Hulk

JOHN BARBER (Marvel editor): The time when the Hulk was leading the Pantheon, during the Peter David/Dale Keown run, and they invade that middle-eastern country and the Hulk has got these huge guns…and bunny slippers. And the Hulk has to confront the possibility that he's gone too far…

FRED VAN LENTE (co-writer of INCREDIBLE HERC): Geez, I'm going to have to say the big fight with the Leader's endless horde of Humanoids back in [TALES TO ASTONISH #64]. I remember watching the animated version from the 60's on TV—in the early 80's, c'mon I'm not that old –and they had this "sproingy" sound effect every time the Hulk hit one of them and it always freaked me out.

Even the Hulk can't
beat the rain

AUBREY SITTERSON (Marvel assistant editor): "Hulk vs the Rain" from INCREDIBLE HULK 2001 by James Kochalka. It was a real sign of the times that Marvel was branching out to different types of artists, and on top of that, it was a fun, funny story!
