Posted: 2008-01-09 Updated: 2008-03-20 08:45:06
Every week we'll pick a handful of awesome comics from the thousands available through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. From creator spotlights, to editor's picks and more, this'll be your spot to find something new and cool.
Just as Stan the Man predicted in the first issue, the Hulk has taken his place alongside some of the most legendary heroes of all time. And he smashed, punched and destroyed everything in his path to get there. In the wake of WORLD WAR HULK and with the new HULK #1 releasing this week, take a gander at these five must-read Hulk stories, available now on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited.
INCREDIBLE HULK #1
Here it is, the birth of an icon. Meet the esteemed Dr. Bruce Banner, who in an unforeseeable accident has his body saturated with lethal Gamma rays. And in a near instant, the Hulk is born. But, this isn't exactly the Hulk we know today. For starters, he's gray and transforms at night. On the other hand, this comic marks another milestone in comic history—the first appearance of those world famous purple pants!
INCREDIBLE HULK #2
The comic that had everyone seeing green. Bruce Banner and his young friend, Rick Jones, attempt to harness the awe-inspiring power of the Hulk, while trying to protect Earth from the alien masters of magnetism, the Toad Men. Angry and absurd, like only Stan and Jack can deliver, the Toad Men draw the moon closer to Earth, threatening the end of mankind. The Hulk is green, the pants are purple and, as always, the comic is awesome.
INCREDIBLE HULK #181
The Hulk's in Canada, what wonders could he behold in the Great White North? While this book offers up the conclusion of a short arc and astoundingly cool fights, that's just the beginning. But, the real reason that this book should already have your spider-sense tingling—it's the first full appearance of everyone's favorite adamantium-clawed mutant badass, Wolverine. Watch these two do the knuckle-shuffle with each other and the Canadian snow-monster, Wendigo
HULK: GRAY #1
Though he isn't much of a conversationalist, Hulk put it best: "The Strongest there is." Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale bring us a new look at the Jade Giant, before he was jade. Banner reminisces to his old friend Doc Samson about how it all began. Loeb and Sale's imagery reminds us exactly why we love the Emerald Avenger in the first place. This is a perfect compliment to Hulk's first appearance.
INCREDIBLE HULK #92 (vol. 2)
Just in case you missed it, here's the first part of "Planet Hulk," where the whole saga began. As it stands, after being betrayed by his friends, marooned on a distant, violence-laden planet and forced into Roman-esque gladiator games, the Hulk is mad, to say the least. Oh, that tyrannical leader of Sakaar has no idea what kind of gamma-irradiated problems have fallen on his doorstep.
