Posted: 2008-02-20 Updated: 2008-02-22 10:46:23
Every week we'll pick a handful of awesome comics from the thousands available through Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited. From creator spotlights, to editor's picks and more, this'll be your spot to find something new and cool.
Wolverine's always been the best there is at what he does...and thankfully, what he does having some of the sickest knock-down, drag-out brawls in comics! This week sees the release of the WOLVERINE: EVOLUTION trade paperback collecting the Wolverine/Sabretooth match with an ending no fan saw coming. We here at Marvel.com thought it would be good to take a trip down memory lane and look at some of Wolvie's past matchups, all available now on Marvel Digital Comics Unlimited.
INCREDIBLE HULK #181
How tough do you have to be to go against the Hulk in your very first appearance? Well, it doesn't hurt to have an adamantium-coated skeleton, that's for sure. Little did the Hulk suspect that his trip to Canada would put him straight in the path of the toughest, coolest, most uncanny X-Men of them all…Wolverine. Add in the Wendigo, and you've got the recipe for some pretty sick fight scenes in this history-making comic!
UNCANNY X-MEN #133
The title says it all, folks: "Wolverine: Alone!" The X-Men lay defeated at the hands of the Hellfire Club and it's up to Wolverine to save them. This gem from the Chris Claremont/John Byrne years epitomizes Wolverine's awesome factor: The guy manages to outwit and outmaneuver the Club's Inner Circle, a group that tok on the X-Men as a whole, all the while looking effortlessly cool. Not bad for a Canadian, eh?
UNCANNY X-MEN #213 ("Mutant Massacre")
Before Wolverine fighting Sabretooth became a monthly event, the conclusion to the "Mutant Massacre" storyline saw one of their original bare-knuckle brawls. Sure, at this point we didn't really know who Sabretooth was beyond the fact that he had some vague connection to Wolverine's past (and who didn't at the time?), but who needs details like that when you've got Alan Davis' awesome pencils showing Wolverine let loose like never before?
WOLVERINE #20
Brainwashed by Hydra, Logan's forced to go toe-to-toe with half the Marvel U. in "Enemy of the State," beginning in this issue. It's all out action as only writer Mark Millar and artist John Romita, Jr. could deliver with Wolvie pitted against all his old allies. If you thought breaking into of the Hellfire Club was hard, wait until you see Wolverine take on a helicarrier full of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. But what's Hydra after, and why is Wolverine the perfect pawn for them? Check it out and see!
ULTIMATE WOLVERINE VS. HULK#1
The classic slugfest, re-imagined for the Ultimate universe as Nick Fury sends Wolverine after a missing (and supposedly dead) Bruce Banner…but what Logan finds is not what he expected. And when our favorite gamma-irradiated hero tears the Canucklehead in half, the results are not pleasant regardless of whether or not you have a healing factor. And that's only the beginning!
