Get ready to secure your storm windows beginning this April as the AGES OF THUNDER sweep through Asgard.
The series of three one-shots by writer Matt Fraction and assorted artists including Patrick Zircher will each present standalone stories, but also follow Thor's evolution as a god through the ages. THOR: AGES OF THUNDER begins with a tale set millennia ago. The second story, "Reign of Blood," shows our hero in the present day, and the third peers into the Thunder God's future.
"Tonally, this is Thor as a primal, colossal myth," promises Fraction. "This is Thor, killer of Frost Giants, big and brutal and epic."
And you know what that means: lots of wicked action sequences.
"If it was a movie, it'd cost a half-billion dollars to make," the writer elaborates. "This is the kind of story that has a scope that only exists in comics."
Since Stan Lee and Jack Kirby first unleashed Thor on the Marvel Universe in 1962, every creator to tackle the thunder god has worked to incorporate real aspects of Norse mythology into the character, but also put on their own spin. Fraction says he hopes to continue that tradition with AGES OF THUNDER:
"It's kind of staggering how confidently and brazenly [Lee and Kirby] took what they wanted, left what they didn't, and scrambled it all up. So [with AGES OF THUNDER I'll be] keeping its roots in the Norse sagas and then completely throwing it all away and re-calibrating it for my own warped ends."
"This is a story about gods, on a godly scale, doing things that boggle us, that stagger the mortal imagination," Fraction concludes. "Even 'super hero' pales in comparison."
