What are Hero Points?

Hero Points have nothing to do with the message board. Hero Points currently measure of your activity on Marvel Universe. Every time one of your profiles/edits is approved, you gain a Hero Point. The more Hero Points you earn, the more privileges you gain on the Marvel Universe. If you have enough Hero Points, you can gain self approval rights where you can approve your own profiles or edits to existing profiles. Users with a lot of Hero Points will also be eligible for many other cool things on Marvel.com!

It is a way to regulate the online encyclopedia profiles to ensure accurate information is being written instead of allowing anyone to write whatever they want about any character. Once a certain number has been reached, it is felt that a person will be able to post good profiles and make good edits to profiles without posting profiles not in a template, too many typos, misinformation or worse yet trying to destroy the profile with nothing related to the character. So there is a reason for them.

If you don't participate in helping the online encyclopedia, then you don't get Hero Points. So, it is up to you. --DragynWulf 20:37, 7 May 2007 (CDT) (Moderator)

What are some tips for writing a good profile?

When creating a profile, there are template to use. You can find a link to those here -----> Help Posting. There is also a help section for other helpful hints/suggestions and you can find that here ----> Help area

When making a new profile, the way I do it is I go to my Userpage (everyone has there own userpage), type a link to the character name like this -----> Hawkeye (when/if you reply you can see exactly how to type it), then click the "Show preview” button at the bottom of the page and it will create a link to that character name. Once you've clicked on that, it will take you to an area where you can create the profile. All profiles/names that are in red, have not been created yet, just click on the link to post a profile for that character. All those in blue have already been created.

Please note that any profiles created without using the templates system here at Marvel.com will be deleted regardless of content.

To edit a profile, just go to the character name, click the "Edit" button at the top of the page and then proceed to edit the profile.

When creating or editing existing profiles, please remember to use a spell checker program. We want this website to be as professional as possible as if it were an actual issue of the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe.

When writing the history for a character remember to write it like you were the Marvel character the Watcher, just standing around only observing the actions taking place. So there should be no references to a comic title or number in the history. Just information that you see happen within the comic itself. The only place to reference a title and issue number are the "debut", "origin" and "significant issues" area.

Also when writing a profile, please list as much information as possible. If you know the character's hair or eye color, then list that. If you know their powers, weapons or appearances, then please list those as well. But only information that is found in the comics themselves or in the OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE. Profiles that only have one line for information and nothing else won't get approved. What are the reasons why profiles might not be approved?

Information entered on a profile is not approved for numerous reasons:

If there are typos in the text it will not be approved. A lot of poster ask why. The reason is because we want this to be as professional as possible and ask that all edits and profiles be written in a spell checking program prior to uploading it.

If the information is incorrect.

If the information added is already mentioned within the profile. Example would be stating that a character knows how to use a specific weapon when the entry already states the character knows how to use all forms of modern weapons. It becomes redundant.

If it is listed in the incorrect area. Example would be listing powers in the weapons area, relatives in the group affiliations, and things like this.

If an edit contains spoiler information from a comic recently released it will not be approved. We like a spoiler cooling limit of at least 4 weeks before posting any spoiler information. On occasion Marvel will have something planned for a profile, usually the Character of the Week in the weekly newsletter, in which Moderators will make the profile as up to date as possible.

If the information is copied from another website (plagiarized) or an image is taken from a website it will not be approved and if it is a new profile, it will be deleted. This is plagiarizing someone else's work. You may use the text from the OFFICIAL HANDBOOK OF THE MARVEL UNIVERSE however, but we ask that you mention this in the summary area so the person that took the time to do the research and write the profile is credited.

If a new profile is made and very little content is on that profile. Example would be just mentioning the real name and first appearance with nothing else for the profile or even just the bio stats. We want as much information as possible listed, like if a poster knows the character's hair or eye color, powers, weapons or appearances. Because if they have a comic that says the name of the character, then they can list what happens to that character in the comic and would know the hair and eye color or other information instead of just the very minor content.

If a template has not been used when creating a profile. It won't be approved. Please check the Help Section: Templates

If a title is mentioned in a profile. Example: In CIVIL WAR #4 a new group of Thunderbolts appear and battle Spider-Man. We want the profiles to be written as if you were a Watcher standing there and viewing events as they happen. Not as a comic reader reading the comic. Feel free to look at other profiles to get an idea on how to write a profile or make edits to existing profiles. Most of the things that are not approved are because of common mistakes, typos, redundant information, links to characters that have links to the characters already in the profile, 10 different edits (instead of one edit covering all 10) to one profile at the same time in order to get more Hero Points.

Some might think, what is so important about making mistakes like those I mentioned above. The reason is because the system we have setup allows a poster to gain self-approval rights (meaning they can approve their own profiles and edits to existing profiles) once they have reached a certain amount of Hero Points. The reason for this is because it is felt that once a poster reaches that amount of points, they know how to properly edit a profile or even create a new profile without someone having to come behind them and clean up a large number of typos, incorrect links and other things. Why do profiles require approval?

If the information on the site was not approved before it is allowed to be added to the profile(s), then this would not be a good source of information. We want the Marvel Universe to be able to be a place for fans to get correct information on the characters they love or even sometimes hate. If there was not an approval system, then posters that wanted to vandalize a profile would be able to put in anything they wanted in a profile. This is why Marvel.com is the best source of information instead of websites like Wikipedia and other online sites that use a wiki based system. --DragynWulf 20:37, 7 May 2007 (CDT) (Moderator)

What is a Userpage?

A Userpage is a poster's private area to talk about themselves, what they like, favorite comics and various other things as long as it remains within the guidelines for an all-ages website (no swearing, posting unappropriate links, etc.).

Each user has a discussion page (or Usertalk page) also that they can discuss various things with other posters. It is here that Moderators will tell you if you are doing something wrong with a profile you have posted. Characters that cannot have profiles

Characters from video games

Profiles for characters in video games are not allowed to be created because Marvel does not own the rights to those characters. Examples of characters are Marvel Nemesis: Rise of the Imperfects. Even though Marvel published a comic about them, they are licensed characters that are not owned by Marvel. Characters from crossovers

Profiles for characters that Marvel has crossed over into can not be created due to Marvel not owning the rights to those characters. This includes any character from DC (JLA/AVENGERS, X-MEN/TEEN TITANS, GREEN LANTERN/SILVER SURFER, etc.), Image, Dynamite ASH VS MARVEL ZOMBIES, RED SONJA/SPIDER-MAN, etc.), and even the Amalgam characters including Access. Access was co-created and therefore neither Marvel or DC own the rights to it.

You can say 'heroes from another reality' in a profile, but you can not mention the actual names of those characters. For example in the Taskmaster profile when he fought characters from the DC Universe I used the following phrase:

"Taskmaster teamed with Shockwave, Whiplash, Crossbones, Zaran the Weapons Master, Tumbler, Razor-Fist, Machete, Conquest and a martial arts expert from the other universe to fight Black Widow, Black Panther and two caped urban knights from the other universe."

Characters from licenced properties

Profiles for characters that Marvel bought the licence rights to publish are not allowed to be created because Marvel does not own these characters. Some of which include Super-Pro, Conan, Transformers, G.I. Joe, Micronauts, and various others. Also, Charcoal from the THUNDERBOLTS is not allowed to be created due to legal issues with the individuals that won the contest.

With Micronauts, there are very few exceptions with that title like Bug and Huntarr for example because those were original characters created by Marvel and not part of the license deal. --DragynWulf 20:37, 7 May 2007 (CDT) (Moderator)

Regarding images

The Marvel.com Universe section is not intended to be an image archive, so users posting images only to be able to link to them from elsewhere will have those images deleted. Further, no fan art, movie or game images are to be posted as they are outside of the scope of this section of the site.

Images posted for use in profiles should be of good quality (ie, no GIF files), be of reasonable filesize (ie, no wallpaper-sized images or the like), and should preferably be "clean" of any text/captions/logos/corner boxes or UPC boxes, as well as being free of any other characters so as to focus on the character being profiled. --ComiX-Fan 19:16, 8 May 2007 (CDT) (Moderator)

Character profile changes

Hellcow and Holocaust

I've recently made an edit to the "Hellcow" Page. As seen here Hellcow, It clearly states that Hellcow died but Hellcow is not listed in the Deceased catergory. I've edited this so that she will be. I've also done the same thing to Holocaust, I would appreaciate if someone approved this. User:fantasticthing

The Ultimates section in the universe section is pathetic

About linking profiles

First, I'm new at this and don't know how to link profiles.

Second, being a Power Pack fan, some characters change names so frequently it's difficult to know which name to use for the profile and how to set up searches so that the profile can be found regardless of the name searched for; e.g. so a search for Mass Master leads to the profile of Destroyer. --bejjinks 14:59, 21 March 2008 (CDT)
