Marvel Fans Break the Internet During 'Avengers: Doomsday' Cast Announcement

It all started with one chair. And then another. And another. Without any prior announcement, Marvel Studios launched a livestream at 8am PT Wednesday morning to unveil the cast of Avengers: Doomsday.  Each cast member was suspensefully revealed to Marvel fans across the world, one actor’s chair at a time, over the course of five and a half hours.

Thanks to the fans, yesterday’s Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement became Marvel’s biggest livestream ever, growing hour over hour. Fans poured into the broadcast from across X (formerly known as Twitter), YouTube, and Instagram, drawing 275 million digital views and generating 3.1 million social mentions. After 24 hours, the livestream was the #2 trending video on YouTube.

Social media buzzed with excitement —and memes— as fan-favorite talent either returned to or joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The livestream caused 55 distinct terms to trend on X/Twitter, with #AvengersDoomsday holding the #1 spot for 7 consecutive hours.

During Wednesday's livestream, Marvel Studios unveiled 27 cast members set to star in Avengers: Doomsday. Cast members from Marvel Studios’ next two films — Thunderbolts*, which kicks off the summer in May, and The Fantastic Four: First Steps in July — will play key roles in Avengers: Doomsday.

The cast features Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.
