Chinese-American teenager Suzanne Chan joins the X-Men and learns to use her time-manipulation powers.
A Sway Over Time
Born to naturalized American parents, David and Emily Chan, shortly after they emigrated from Hong Kong, Suzanne lives a normal life with them in California. That is, until the fateful day at 17 when her parents accompany her to New York to visit Barnard College, where she hopes to further her studies. While visiting Chinatown, they get caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout during which Suzanne unwittingly manifests her mutant ability to stop time, preventing the bullets from hitting her; however, she cannot stop her parents from being killed. Briefly hospitalized, Suzanne later returns to the scene of the crime where she learns she can use her power to replay past events. Locating the killers, Suzanne freezes time around them, allowing the police to arrest them without incident.
She comes under the care of world-renowned geneticist Moira MacTaggert. At Moira’s research facility, she joins a group of other young mutants where she trains in the use of her powers and receives the codename “Sway.”
Temporal Manipulation
Sway can control the time within her immediate vicinity, enabling her to slow or stop time in minute radiuses. She can also replay the recent past in short bursts, witnessing recent events as ghostly images. While her control over her abilities is not very advanced, she is still able to slow time long enough to save her fellow X-Men after being cut in half.
Against the Clock
To save Scott Summers, AKA Cyclops, Sway, and her X-Men teammates travel to and fight off the mutant island of Krakoa—a living ecosystem made up of a collection of impulses that creates monstrous avatars. Though the island strikes Sway down, killing her before she can escape.
Time for Heroic Allies
Suzanne learns how to control her mutant powers under geneticist Moira’s guidance at the Muir-MacTaggert Research & Development Institute. There, she joins fellow mutant students Petra, a geo-morph; the evolving boy Armando Muñoz, AKA Darwin; and energy manipulator Gabriel Summers, AKA Kid Vulcan. In return for Moira helping them, the students helped her with her genetic research.
Soon afterward, Professor Charles Xavier, AKA Professor X, recruits Sway and her fellow mutants to be a part of the X-Men. Though her time as an X-Man ceases when she dies, saving Cyclops and her teammates.
A Look Back in Time
Later recruited by Moira’s colleague Professor Charles Xavier to join his X-Men, Suzanne and her fellow students accepted the invitation. The mission: to rescue that team’s original members from the living island Krakoa—many years before he formed the X-Men we now know. He gave Sway and the new mutants a crash course on how to be X-Men in the Mindscape, which they thought was a real place with real threats. Time there moved slower as well, so their training lasted months longer than how time passed outside of it.
Locating Cyclops on the island, they freed him and then saved the others; however, the island savagely retaliated, weakening the team and cutting Sway in half. With her dying act, Sway slowed time around her teammates, granting them a fighting chance against Krakoa’s onslaught. Thanks in part to her efforts in combination with Petra’s natural reflex to make the ground swallow the others, her teammates Darwin and Kid Vulcan survived.
