Hawkeye by Fraction, Aja, Hollingsworth & Wu

In Hawkeye (2012) #1

I love that the first thing that happens in this comic is that Hawkeye INJURES himself and ends up in a hospital. Because Hawkeye, unlike many other heroes, has a fragile human skeleton. It’s this perfect sequence that tells you exactly the hero you’re going to get, from the moment you read, “Okay. This looks bad.” I am obsessed with Aja’s panels and layouts, and the haiku that are Fraction’s captions and dialogue.

She-Hulk by Charles Soule, Javier Pulido & Muntsa Vicente

In She-Hulk (2014) #1

I dig that the biggest action sequence in this comic is where Jen destroys the fancy desk of her soon-to-be-former firm with a touch of her finger. Also the legalese mixed with some classic She-Hulk dry wit is like a five star meal.

Nextwave by Warren Ellis, Stuart Immonen & Dave McCaig

In Nextwave: Agents of H.a.T.E. (2006) #1

Some of my fave super hero stories are wacky. I love a cast of characters that bring an individual form of wacky that contributes to a big, wacky picture. Ellis creates a team that is a jagged twist on the familiar, which also perfectly fits together. I ADORE Nextwave. The dialogue, the illustrations. There’s a comic in this series that’s mostly upside down that I loved even though it made me nauseous.

All-New Wolverine by Taylor, Lopez, Navarrot & Fairbairn

In All-New Wolverine (2015) #1

Obviously I am biased, OBVIOUSLY, but I love this series because it gave us so many characters to love, including Gabby, and because it is just a great, nuanced, origin story without specifically being an origin story.
