Magneto, then going by Erik Magnus Lehnsherr, and Charles Xavier both worked at a psychiatric hospital in Israel that treated Holocaust survivors. Although neither revealed their status as a mutant, Xavier started to suspect Magnus was a mutant when he had trouble reading his mind during their first conversation, as revealed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/13702\/uncanny_x-men_1963_161\">UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #161<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/44\/chris_claremont\">Chris Claremont<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/46\/dave_cockrum\">Dave Cockrum<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>With their shared interest in mutants, Xavier and Magnus became fast friends, and Magnus even encouraged Xavier to pursue a romance with his recently recovered patient <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/gabrielle-haller\">Gabrielle Haller<\/a>. Magneto declared war on humans and tried to take over the Cape Citadel missile base in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/12413\/uncanny_x-men_1963_1\">UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #1<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/30\/stan_lee\">Stan Lee<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/196\/jack_kirby\">Jack Kirby<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>After Xavier's newly formed X-Men saved Cape Citadel and defeated Magneto in several subsequent battles, Magneto created a powerful being called Alpha, the Ultimate Mutant. With the X-Men on another mission, Xavier teamed up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/teams-and-groups\/defenders\/in-comics\">Defenders<\/a> to confront him.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Once the constantly-evolving Alpha considered Xavier, Magneto, and their dueling philosophies, he turned Magneto into an infant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/20322\/defenders_1972_16\">DEFENDERS (1972) #16<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/967\/len_wein\">Len Wein<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/105\/sal_buscema\">Sal Buscema<\/a>. Xavier placed Magneto in the care of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/moira-mactaggert\">Moira MacTaggert<\/a>, who tried to genetically modify him to be more mentally stable.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>After he rapidly aged back into adulthood, Magneto confronted Xavier's growing roster of X-Men. He even managed to defeat the team, briefly imprisoning them in his underground Antarctic base. He also created an island base in the Bermuda Triangle and brought down a nuclear submarine. When Stryker forced him to attack the X-Men, Xavier considered abandoning his mission and embracing Magneto's way, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/cyclops-scott-summers\">Cyclops<\/a> ultimately convinced his mentor to continue pursuing his dream.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>When the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/maker\">Beyonder<\/a> transported them all to Battleworld, Magneto teamed up with Professor X and the X-Men again in the original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/series\/2063\/secret_wars_1984_-_1985\">SECRET WARS (1984)<\/a>, and he even had a brief romance with Lee Forrester, a human sailor.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Around this time, Professor X and Moira MacTaggert quietly brought Magneto into their secret plans to save mutantkind, as revealed in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/72992\/powers_of_x_2019_2\">POWERS OF X (2019) #2<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/11743\/jonathan_hickman\">Jonathan Hickman<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/12489\/rb_silva\">R.B. Silva<\/a>. With Xavier's help, Moira showed Magneto she was a mutant who had lived through several previous timelines where mutants were eventually exterminated.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Shaken by the doomed futures he saw, Magneto joined MacTaggert and Xavier's plans to build a sustainable mutant nation on the island of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/krakoa\">Krakoa<\/a>. After a weakened Professor X telepathically asked Magneto for help dealing with the Beyonder, Magneto came to the X-Men's aid again.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Magneto even stopped <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/marvel-girl-rachel-summers\">Rachel Summers<\/a>, a mutant from a future where mutant-hunting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/teams-and-groups\/sentinels\">Sentinels<\/a> took over America, from killing a human who shot at her in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/13737\/uncanny_x-men_1963_196\">UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #196<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/44\/chris_claremont\">Chris Claremont<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/13196\/john_romita_jr.\">John Romita Jr<\/a>. As he explained, Magneto had come to believe his actions had only made things worse for mutants and that killing humans justified the hatred and fear humans felt for mutants.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Magneto surrendered himself to the authorities and stood trial for his crimes, but his trial was interrupted by an attack from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/characters\/1009302\/fenris\">Fenris<\/a>, the twin children of Baron Von Strucker, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/13741\/uncanny_x-men_1963_200\">UNCANNY X-MEN (1963) #200<\/a> by Claremont and Romita Jr. When Xavier was seriously wounded, he asked a shocked Magneto to lead the X-Men while he recovered in space. After gaining a zealous new group of followers called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/teams-and-groups\/acolytes\">Acolytes<\/a>, Magneto reignited his war on humanity when he learned Moira had tried to alter his genetics.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/guides\/1464\/x-men-fatal-attractions\">\"Fatal Attractions\"<\/a> crossover, Magneto set off an electromagnetic pulse that killed thousands by wiping out the world's electronics. He also brutally ripped the adamantium metal off <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/wolverine-james-howlett\">Wolverine<\/a>'s bones in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/14312\/x-men_1991_25\">X-MEN (1991) #25<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/6001\/fabian_nicieza\">Fabian Nicieza<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/175\/andy_kubert\">Andy Kubert<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>In retaliation, Professor X unleashed a vicious telepathic attack on Magneto. Although that attack left Magneto incapacitated, the momentary merger of Xavier and Magneto's minds created an evil psychic entity called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/onslaught\">Onslaught<\/a>, which briefly took over the X-Men founder's body. &nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Once Magneto and Professor X recovered, the Master of Magnetism attacked the world again in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/12393\/x-men_the_magneto_war_1999_1\">X-MEN: THE MAGNETO WAR (1999) #1<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/16\/alan_davis\">Alan Davis<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/6001\/fabian_nicieza\">Fabian Nicieza<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/8991\/lee_weeks\">Lee Weeks<\/a>. During that ordeal, Magneto took control of the mutant nation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/important-x-men-locations-explained-list\">Genosha<\/a>. Once he rebuilt Genosha, Magneto kidnapped Xavier and threatened to wage war on the human world. However, that massacre merely paved the way for Professor X and Magneto to rekindle their friendship.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>As <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/xorn\">Xorn<\/a> killed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/phoenix-jean-grey\">Jean Grey<\/a> and thousands of humans while impersonating him, the real Magneto remained in the rubble of Genosha, unaware of the outside world. Xavier found him, and the two old friends put their differences aside to rebuild Genosha together in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/648\/excalibur_2004_1\">EXCALIBUR (2004) #1<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/44\/chris_claremont\">Chris Claremont<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/540\/aaron_lopresti\">Aaron Lopresti<\/a>. In the lead-up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/guides\/258\/house-of-m-the-complete-event\">HOUSE OF M (2005)<\/a>, they also tried to help Magneto's troubled adoptive daughter, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/characters\/scarlet-witch-wanda-maximoff\">Scarlet Witch<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Although Professor X and Magneto briefly lost their powers, they each found ways to restore their abilities. Magneto even helped restore an amnesiac Xavier's mind in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/20957\/x-men_legacy_2008_210\">X-MEN: LEGACY (2008) #210<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/366\/mike_carey\">Mike Carey<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/creators\/5106\/scot_george_eaton\">Scot Eaton<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>However, both leaders felt that mutant culture had started to grow beyond them, especially once Cyclops gathered the world's remaining mutants on the island of Utopia. After they both moved to the island, they followed Cyclops' lead until the X-Men leader was possessed by the Dark Phoenix and killed Professor X in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/comics\/issue\/41279\/avengers_vs_x-men_2012_11\">AVENGERS VS. Together, Xavier and Magneto served as the public face of Krakoa and set up the nation by recruiting other mutant leaders, making trade deals, perfecting the process of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/krakoa-mutant-resurrection-the-five-explained\">resurrecting dead mutants<\/a>, and preparing for threats like the mutant-hating organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/orchis-x-men-villain-mutant-threat-explained\">Orchis<\/a>. Professor X and Magneto also served as two members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/teams-and-groups\/quiet-council-of-krakoa\">Quiet Council<\/a>, the nation's first governing body.<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>While leading Krakoa, Magneto led the effort to terraform <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marvel.com\/articles\/comics\/x-men-mutants-mars-arakko-explained\">Mars<\/a> and turn it into a habitable planet for the Arakki, a long-lost ancient race of mutants. However, the pair's influence over Krakoa began to weaken, especially when MacTaggert's secrets were revealed to the Quiet Council and she left to join Orchis.&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n\r\n<p>Where Magneto stepped down from the Quiet Council and took a more prominent role in Arakko, Xavier tried to guide Krakoa through several damaging crises.
