MARVEL SNAP Explained: Who Is Negasonic Teenage Warhead?

Find out her comic origins and best strategies for playing in the hit game MARVEL SNAP!

MARVEL SNAP Explained: Who Is Negasonic Teenage Warhead?

MARVEL SNAP’s Days of Future Past Season Pass has officially launched, and this time around, a big theme of the game’s new cards is Destroy effects. One of those cards, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, has an ability inspired by the comics that could completely change the game for Destroy effects. Here’s what you need to know about playing Negasonic Teenage Warhead in MARVEL SNAP and her history in the comics.

Playing Negasonic Teenage Warhead in MARVEL SNAP

A 3-Cost, 2-Power card, Negasonic Teenage Warhead has an ability that destroys both her and whatever is played after her at that same location. In and of itself, that ability is a powerful one that can discourage opponents from putting cards down at her location. With the right synergy, though, she can become a valuable card for any player.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead pairs well with cards that benefit from being destroyed, such as Nova, Wolverine, Bucky Barnes, Nimrod, or Deadpool. Her ability is a relatively easy way to activate their effects, which increase their Power. Deadpool is a particularly good pairing, as his ability causes him to double in Power each time he’s destroyed. Players can essentially use Negasonic Teenage Warhead in conjunction with Carnage, Venom, Killmonger, and any other card that has a destroy effect to significantly boost the Merc With a Mouth.

In addition to working with those cards, Negasonic Teenage Warhead can help set up several powerful 6-Cost cards. Arnim Zola’s On Reveal ability can be used to destroy one card at a location and add copies to the other two, which also makes him an effective partner for someone like Deadpool. Knull, for his part, gains the combined Power of all cards destroyed in a game, and so Negasonic Teenage Warhead helps with that.

In terms of counters for Negasonic Teenage Warhead, she’s not particularly effective against other Destroy decks, as an opponent can take advantage of her abilities and use it for themselves. Cards like Aero can also spell trouble, as she’s able to move Negasonic Teenage Warhead into a potentially disadvantageous position, especially later in the game.

As for locations, there aren’t a ton that are explicitly beneficial to Negasonic Teenage Warhead. However, place like Elysium and The Peak will make her slightly cheaper to get out, which makes the above destroy strategy slightly more effective. Mostly, the benefit to Negasonic Teenage Warhead and locations comes from being able to make an opponent think twice before putting a new card down on one. Likewise, there aren’t any real negative locations for her that aren’t also disadvantageous to most other cards.

Negasonic Teenage Warhead in the Comics

Created by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, Ellie Phimister, AKA Negasonic Teenage Warhead, debuted in NEW X-MEN (2001) #115. In the comics, Phimister is a telepathic mutant. She specifically has prognostic powers and was one of Emma Frost’s students on Genosha, just prior to that location’s destruction during the “E for Extinction” arc, which saw by the Sentinels and Cassandra Nova wiping out millions of mutants. Phimister, who had visions of the attack the night before it happened, was among those who died. The MARVEL SNAP Negasonic Teenage Warhead card reflects this history in a major way. The fact that her card affects what’s played after her is a form of prognostication, especially in terms of developing a strategy that makes use of her effect, and at the same time, that power is tied directly to her own death.

After being absent from the comics for several years, Negasonic Teenage Warhead returned in DEADPOOL & THE MERCS FOR MONEY (2016). At the start of that series, the titular Merc With a Mouth captured Phimister for a company called Umbral Dynamics, who subjected her to experimentation. Deadpool later rescued her, and the two have teamed up on several occasions since then. Prior to that series, Negasonic Teenage Warhead had always been depicted as a goth girl. However, in DEADPOOL & THE MERCS FOR MONEY #6, she received her current, punk-inspired costume, which is the one shown on the MARVEL SNAP card. Her strong synergy with Deadpool also seems to thus have some connection to the comics.

During her adventures with Deadpool, Negasonic Teenage Warhead learned that she had the power to alter matter and, seemingly, alter timelines, as in DEADPOOL & THE MERCS FOR MONEY #7, she traveled back in time to prevent a potentially bad future from happening. Negasonic Teenage Warhead’s inclusion in the Days of Future Past Season Pass is then quite fitting, as she absolutely has ties to one of the terrible timelines that name evokes.
