Cody Ziglar Shows a Different Side of 'Miles Morales: Spider-Man' & Friends in New Infinity Comic
Writer Cody Ziglar offers a 'slice of life' look at Miles and his community in 'Astonishing Miles Morales: Spider-Man Infinity Comic.'
Over the course of MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN, Miles has become a vampire, developed a new Vibranium suit with Black Panther, faced a pantheon of gods, and teamed up with Deadpool and Daughters—but at the end of the day, he’s still just a kid from Brooklyn. So, in ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN INFINITY COMIC by Cody Ziglar and Alessandro Miracolo, Miles gets a break to hang with his friends and spend time in his community… at least until bee-themed villains Bumbler and Vespa interrupt their visit to the Brooklyn Builds: Sculpture Exhibit!
Speaking to Marvel.com, Ziglar described his new ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN INFINITY COMIC series as a “slice of life” story that allows him to tell smaller, more personal stories. He explained how the Infinity Comic acts as “a companion piece” to MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN by shining a spotlight on characters who don’t get as much focus in the main series. He also teased the return of a classic Miles villain, discussed the Infinity Comic’s lighthearted tone, and so much more.
MARVEL.COM: Set the stage for us: where do we find Miles and his family and friends when ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN INFINITY COMIC picks up?
CODY ZIGLAR: ASTONISHING SPIDER-MAN doesn’t necessarily pick up from where the main book leaves off. I would think of it of it more as a companion piece—something that fills in the gaps in between major arcs and allows us to maybe dive into stuff that was planted in the main series that we didn’t have time to pay off or unpack.
So it’s a good place to catch up on characters that we’ve introduced, but we don’t have the page space to flesh out in the main book, or to flesh out characters that appeared in the book and give them their back stories, or just dive into them a little bit more! You don’t necessarily need to have read the main series, but it would definitely help because it does reference things that happen in it.
MARVEL.COM: How does ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN INFINITY COMIC fit into your print series MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN?
CODY ZIGLAR: Like [I said in] my previous answer, this series definitely has a bit of "plug and play," in that it’s pretty concurrent with what’s happening in the actual book, but it’s more of like a slice of life where we're focusing on moments that we weren’t able to necessarily flesh out in the main book. They're canon side stories, which allow us the benefit to dive into characters that couldn’t get a lot of love in the main book because they would distract from Miles too much.
MARVEL.COM: You’ve been working with Miles for some time now, between MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN, ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN: INCURSION, and now this Infinity Comic. What makes Miles feel so special to you, and what side of him do you explore in ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN INFINITY COMIC?
CODY ZIGLAR: This is a great question, and also very hard to answer because I have been lucky enough to have spent the past five years writing a character that I absolutely love! One thing that I really enjoy about the possibilities of ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN is that it lets us explore parts of Miles that I didn't have room to cover in the main book: mostly his school life and his family life—things that I really enjoy writing, but because the nature of the beast, I wasn’t able to dive in them into them as fully as I would like. It's nice being able to check in on Miles’ school life and personal life and fill out areas that I thought were lacking in the main book.
MARVEL.COM: What did the Infinity Comic give you the opportunity to do that perhaps the main series doesn’t?
CODY ZIGLAR: I think the main thing is that it took the pressure off as far as having to have big bombastic stories like we do in a main print comic—not to say that they aren’t big adventures in this, but because of the formatting, it allows us to have smaller, more personal stories, which I really enjoy. It also lets us be a bit more lighthearted than maybe we’re able to get in the main book.
MARVEL.COM: What made Bumbler and Vespa the right villains for this first story arc?
CODY ZIGLAR: The reason I chose Bumbler and Vespa is because it just felt right! [laughs] Bumbler was literally the first character I ever created, not only for Marvel, but for comic books in general! So it only felt right that he and his cousin would have a feature in the first issue of ASTONISHING MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN.
He's a character that I find very funny and is a quintessential Spider villain in that he is goofy, but has his heart in the right place, even though he doesn’t always make the best choices in life. It's fun shining a bit more light on their background.
MARVEL.COM: Who else might we run into as the series progresses?
CODY ZIGLAR: We will definitely dive into characters that have appeared throughout the series. It’s a fun place to see some fan favorites! My favorite speedster might show up—who's to say!
MARVEL.COM: Tell me a little about working with artist Alessandro Miracolo. What does he bring to this series?
CODY ZIGLAR: He has been so fun to work with, and it has been great to work with an artist who is familiar with this format. Writing Infinity Comics is much different than writing traditional comics, even though I didn’t think it would be that different. Structurally, the writing is kind of the same, but the way the art flows is much different, which took me a while to wrap my head around. But the format really allows us to have some really fun moments with the medium.
MARVEL.COM: What are you most excited for readers to see?
CODY ZIGLAR: The return of a classic Miles villain—that’s all that I’ll say!
