Today in Marvel History: The Debut of Weapon X
On January 24, 1991, Wolverine's appearance in Marvel Comics Presents #72 started it all!
That familiar SNIKT! sound got an adamantium twang 28 years ago today.
On January 24, 1991, MARVEL COMICS PRESENTS #72 saw the beginning of a landmark moment for one of the most popular characters in the history of the House of Ideas...
Written and illustrated by legendary creator Barry Windsor-Smith, Wolverine started a long an painful journey with the Weapon X program in the issue. Captured and taken to the secretive government agency, Logan's body was infused with the unbreakable metal called adamantium. His claws have a signature shine to them, but the source of their special metallic qualities was only revealed starting with issue #72.
Emerging in the heyday of mutant mayhem, the tale depicted the physical and mental stress that Logan's body was put under during the event, which left him a changed man forever.
Refusing to be subdued, however, Wolverine fought against the evil group in an attempt to keep his life and his sanity intact. The episode, however, would loom over him and his mutant friends for years to come, with the Weapon X program serving as the most prominent example in a long line of opportunistic baddies looking to take advantage of the X-Men and their powers.
