A Look Inside ‘Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics’ with Alex Segura

Create your own Marvel-style comic book with this practical guide featuring expert insights from Marvel’s top writers, artists, and editors this October.

This fall, novelist and comic book author Alex Segura pens a new book for anyone who wants to dive into the unique magic that makes Marvel comic books tick. From Random House Worlds, learn how to create your own Marvel-style comic books with Marvel's Mastering the Art of Comics, available October 20, 2026.

“There’s a special energy to a Marvel book – a sense that anything could happen,” Segural tells Marvel.com. “And while things may seem fantastical and supernatural, it’s still happening just outside your window.”

In addition to writing comics, Segura has worked in publicity, marketing, and editorial, and has taught classes about pitching comics, making him an ideal author for this project.

“When Marvel approached me about doing a how-to book on how to channel Marvel energy into your own work, I was ecstatic,” remembers Segura. “I also saw it as a way to relay some of the ideas and thoughts I’d gleaned as a reader, friend, and colleague to so many amazing creators and editors.”

The book guides readers through every step in the process of creating a Marvel comic book, including crafting the perfect pitch, creating compelling characters, designing a knock-out cover, and telling an epic story across panels, pages, and issues.

“This is a book that newcomers will enjoy, but that will also serve as a working handbook for creators looking to infuse their work with the verve and energy of Marvel Comics, from the characters to the setting, and from idea to colors and letters,” says Segura.

The book includes scenes from X-Men, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, and The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as Q&As from over a dozen creatives who worked on Marvel comics. Among the creatives who contributed their wisdom to the book are writers Fabian Nicieza, Kurt Busiek, Tini Howard, and Kieron Gillen, as well as artists Walt Simonson, Phil Noto, Kris Anka, and Leonard Kirk.

“I was always an X-Men, Spider-Man, and Daredevil guy – so getting Chip Zdarsky to talk about Spidey as a character, or Ann Nocenti to discuss Daredevil’s supporting cast, for example, felt like the kind of thing I’d have loved to see as a younger fan,” shares Segura.

Other topics covered in the book include how to create comic’s supporting cast, developing conflict, plot and pacing, as well as how to write and design great brawls. Segura hopes Marvel’s Mastering the Art of Comics captures the wonder and power of not only the early Marvel comics from the 1960’s, but also the way current titles carry that legacy.

The author already counts himself among the people who gained knowledge from the book’s contents. “I learned a lot of technical stuff – but I also learned a lot of instinctual advice that will add a new flavor to my own work. So, in many ways, I was learning as I wrote this – so I can guarantee it’ll work!”
