'Marvel's Cloak & Dagger': Behind-the-Scenes on How VFX Makes Tandy and Tyrone's Powers Their Own Character

Watch the incredible process of how VFX brings the otherworldliness of the series to life!

The beauty of Marvel Television shows is that they're grounded in reality.

How then do they show individuals with extraordinary gifts in a grounded, rooted in reality, manner? In an Earth's Mightiest Show bonus, Eric McAvoy, visual effects producer for "Marvel's Cloak & Dagger," stopped by our studio to talk about the process of creating Tandy and Tyrone's powers. You can check out the discussion above.

According to McAvoy, the most challenging and time-consuming scene came from last week's episode, Ep. 207 — Vikingtown Sound. After Tandy and Tyrone are reunited following her capture by D'Spayre, due to the amount of energy Tyrone used, he collapses from bleeding out and is slowly covered by his shadowy dark energy. However, this energy bleeding out of Tyrone doesn't just encases him; it spills out all over and pours up the stairs and fills the room.

McAvoy revealed Tyrone's dark energy effect is all computer-generated. His power doesn't require any props outside of just his cloak/hoodie to play off of. The team has to use gravity and wind to get the particles to move the way they want it to. The simulations are all physics-based.

On the flip side, Tandy has an actual dagger prop with internal light mechanisms. They then run the scene into a computer to give the power effects a unique otherworldly quality. That's not Tandy's only power this season; she's able to manifest a huge light bomb. This power didn't originate from the comic book source and really allowed the VFX team room to play around with its look.

Visual Effects is another character of the show; the team truly have to infuse emotion and character into the inanimate (animate) objects the actors have to work around with. They're an extension of the characters, and have to ensure the effects manifest in such a way. Watch the full interview above!
