Biography

Wingin’ It

Born to a Chinese-Japanese family, Colleen Wing was sent to live in Japan with her grandfather after she was orphaned at a young age. Colleen was eventually sent to train with The Hand, and found support and stability with the group. Her sensei within The Hand, Bakuto, taught her to be a master martial artist and a mentor to others in need.

Colleen would use the skills and leadership that Bakuto imparted to her, opening her own martial arts studio.

Come on, Colleen

Colleen is a multilingual master fighter who’s deceptively strong and endlessly determined. Able to defeat opponents much larger than herself, or foes who attack her in large numbers, Colleen is almost impossible to take down. She’s also a skilled warrior with the katana, which is her weapon of choice.

Sworn Ally of the Sworn Enemy of The Hand

Colleen came to find out that The Hand, an organization she was once devoted to, is an evil plague upon the world that is determined to kill anyone who blocks their path.

Learning the true nature of The Hand places Wing in direct opposition with her mentor, Bakuto, whom she rejects in order to side with Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist and sworn enemy of The Hand.

Colleen Wing and Iron Fist (Danny Rand)

Though wary of  Danny Rand’s true intentions and identity at first, Colleen eventually trusts him and as their relationship grows she falls in love with him. They develop a strong relationship as they work together to fight the Hand.

Claire Temple and Colleen Wing

Like Misty Knight and Claire Temple, Colleen finds herself allied and aligned with super-powered individuals on a quest to stop large swaths of powerful enemies. In fact, Claire and Colleen become friends when Temple begins to train at Wing’s dojo. In the wake of Misty Knight losing an arm in battle, Colleen has become closer with Misty, helping her rebuild her confidence.

On a Wing and a Prayer

While posting flyers for her Chikara Dojo, Colleen met Danny Rand, whom she mistook for a homeless man in the park. When he asked for a job at her dojo, she assumed he wanted to sweep up or do odd jobs, never assuming that he too was a master of martial arts. Danny appeared at her dojo later, and in martial arts tradition politely challenge her, and explained that he was trained in kung fu from the monks in the mythical city of K’un-Lun.

After Danny found himself wrongfully committed to Birch Psychiatric Hospital, he called Colleen for help. She refused. However, when Rand Enterprises CEO Ward Meachum visited her dojo to try to get her to sign a paper stating that Danny was dangerous, she grew suspicious and declined the offer.

After Danny broke out of Birch Psychiatric Hospital, he sought refuge in the dojo. When Ward’s men came looking for him there, Colleen fought them off. Danny apologized and said he’d pay for the damages; Wing asked him to be gone by morning.

The next morning, Danny was still there, claiming to have stuck around because he wanted to protect his new benefactor. After allowing him to stay for a week, Colleen kicked him out once again after he forcefully “trained” some her students in the harsh, unforgiving way that he’d been instructed in K’un-Lun.

Colleen then, violating her Bushido code of conduct pertaining to martial arts, raised much-needed money for the dojo by entering an underground fighting competition. She won under the name “Daughter of the Dragon.” After her students saw a video of the fight, that she didn’t know existed, she apologized to them for her behavior. However, this wouldn’t be the last time she fought there…

Claire Temple, looking for lessons in self-defense, began training at Colleen’s dojo. When Danny popped in, bringing food in order to create a “date” atmosphere, he, Colleen, and Claire all ate together. After Claire left, Danny asked Colleen to help him secretly root out a bad element within his company, Rand Enterprises, that was selling drugs.

Thwarting an attempt by The Hand to eliminate a drug manufacturer named Radovan Bernivig, Colleen and Danny rescued the criminal before he could be killed, even though he still suffered a near-fatal gunshot wound. They checked Radovan into the hospital, under a fake name, but it wasn’t long before Hand ninjas, disguised as nurses, made off with him.

Afterward, Colleen and Danny, allied with the New York Triad the Hatchets, embarked on an assault on The Hand that eventually steered them to China, where they hoped to track down one of the leaders of The Hand, Madame Gao, and destroy her heroin operation. After learning that Gao was behind his parents’ deaths, Danny and the others took The Hand leader back to the U.S. and interrogated her in the dojo. Colleen, meanwhile, slowly succumbed to a poison wound she received while fighting in China.

At this point, Colleen’s former mentor, Bakuto, arrived, defeated Gao’s goons, and taught Danny how to heal his pupil with the power of the Iron Fist. Bakuto then took Colleen, Danny, and Gao into custody at his headquarters. Colleen was forced to admit that Bakuto, and the place that had trained her, were part of The Hand but the good sect of the organization, causing a huge rift between her and Danny. Despite their argument, Colleen helped Danny escape the compound.

Eventually, Colleen’s old dojo students, now working for The Hand, trapped her and took her back to Bakuto as a prisoner. Wing escaped and reconciled with Danny, the two of them vowing to stop him.

Colleen clashed with Davos, one of Danny’s old friends and a previous contender for the Iron Fist mantle in K’un-Lun, who had a hardline approach to dealing with The Hand. When Colleen battled Bakuto, student versus teacher style, she refused to kill him. However, Davos stepped in and stabbed Bakuto in the heart, showing no mercy to The Hand, just like he was taught.

Framed as drug smugglers, and on the run from both The Hand and the DEA, Colleen and Danny decided to find evidence in the Rand Enterprises building that would clear them of all charges. There they battled and defeated the twice-resurrected, ruthless businessman Harold Meachum.

Colleen accompanied Danny to K’un-Lun where the two of them were devastated to find the city gone. Blaming The Hand for K’un-Lun’s fate, the duo vowed to travel the world, tracking down members responsible for their siege of K’un-Lun.

Their search led them back to New York where, after an altercation with The Hand intersected with Luke Cage’s own side investigation, Colleen and Claire decided that Danny should team with the Harlem-based hero in the war against The Hand.

Following The Hand’s ultimate leader Alexandra Reid’s all-out assault on Danny, Cage, Jessica Jones, and Matt Murdock, they sought shelter and recovered in Colleen’s dojo. Colleen assisted the newly-minted Defenders in their mission to stop the Hand, getting injured in the process, and eventually winding up among the friends and allies who were taken to Detective Misty Knight’s police precinct for protection.

Knowing that Bakuto had been brought back to life via The Hand’s knowledge of resurrection, and that Danny had been captured to be used as a tool in their plot to tap into a source of power, Colleen and Claire went to Midland Circle—The Hand’s main building—to help the Defenders fight Elektra, Madame Gao, Bakuto, and Murakami.

Once again pitted against Bakuto, Colleen gave it her all in trying to defeat her teacher once again, this time with no plans for mercy. After Misty lost an arm when saving Claire from Bakuto’s blades, Colleen defeated him and decapitated him with her katana.

Colleen visited Misty in the hospital, letting her know that Danny would lean on his company to make sure she received the best care. She then returned to her dojo, where she reflected on Matt Murdock’s presumed death and shared a kiss with the Immortal Iron Fist.

Awhile later, Colleen checked in on Misty, who was still adjusting to the loss of her arm. Colleen sparred with her in an attempt to convince her that she was only as limited as she convinced herself to be. Refusing to let Misty feel sorry for herself, Colleen decided to take her to a local bar.

After several rounds of drinks, a tipsy Colleen and Misty were approached by a man who pretended to flirt at first, but then revealed himself to be the relative of someone Misty had sent to prison. Misty fought both the man and his buddy—using only her one arm—while Colleen watched, initially refusing to help because she wanted Misty to succeed or fail on her own. After Misty proved that she could still handle herself, Colleen stepped in to help end the fight. The experience wound up being the perfect therapy for a newly-motivated Misty.
