Biography

Biography

When criminal scientist Calvin Zabo experimented on himself he inadvertently altered his own genetic makeup and passed on abnormal qualities to his illegitimate daughter, Daisy Johnson. After being given up for adoption by her birth mother, Johnson grew up a troubled yet highly intelligent youth and eventually dropped out of high school to fend for herself on the streets. During one incident of stealing, she exhibited the ability to create earthquake-like vibrations when she became angry and anxious.

Nick Fury, the Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., noticed Johnson and ensured her entry into the spy organization so he could monitor her development as an agent. The young woman excelled at the challenge and swiftly rose in S.H.I.E.L.D.’s ranks to take on an important role as one of Fury’s most trusted operatives. During this time, she honed her powers to a fine degree of control and discovered that her father’s experimentation activated already existing Inhuman genes within her, gifting her with her earthquake ability. This power has also earned her the infrequently used codename “Quake.”

Whole Lotta Shakin’ Goin’ On

Johnson has the ability to produce massive vibratory waves of power that cause earthquake-like effects, augmented by special gauntlets she wears. She has fine-tuned this ability to be able to impact very small areas as well as large ones, and remains largely immune to the effect herself. Beyond her powers, she is a skilled S.H.I.E.L.D. agent with extensive training and experience in personal combat, weapons, and covert operations.

Enemies and Allies

Quake

Johnson’s natural tendency toward hot-headedness has won her few friends, but her mentor-student relationship with Nick Fury might be described as a close one. Fury’s guidance helped develop leadership qualities within her, providing her with a path in life that, while at times fulfilling, has also caused her strife. Conversely, her relationship with sometimes-director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Maria Hill has often been strained, like her connection with her biological father, Calvin Zabo.

Accomplished S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Phil Coulson befriended the young woman while they worked together, to the extent of Coulson bestowing her with the affectionate nickname “Skye.”

Perhaps Johnson’s one true enemy is Lucia von Bardas, onetime monarch of the small European nation of Latveria. Von Bardas ascended to the throne with the help of the United States when Doctor Doom was deposed, but her rulership proved short-lived when Johnson was tasked by Fury to help overthrow von Bardas in a secret coup. The two women became adversaries during that mission, and have clashed on more than one occasion since then.

Mission Status

After several S.H.I.E.L.D. missions against various Super Villains and other threats, Johnson accepted a mission from Nick Fury to join with Captain America and other costumed heroes to secretly invade Latveria and depose its then-current monarch, Lucia von Bardas. During the struggle, Johnson brought about an earthquake that seemingly killed von Bardas. At a later time, von Bardas returned for revenge on Johnson and the others, but was again apparently destroyed by the young S.H.I.E.L.D. agent.

When Fury replaced himself with a Life Model Decoy, Johnson clashed with an angry Wolverine and defeated him with her powers, yet afterward was removed from duty by incoming S.H.I.E.L.D. director Maria Hill.

Quake

Inactive for a while, she took on a mission to the island of Genosha to fight the super criminal Magneto alongside the Avengers and X-Men. Johnson proved instrumental in stopping Magneto when she brought about powerful vibrations in his brain at Captain America’s direction. Despite her desire to join the Avengers as “Quake” in the aftermath, membership would elude Johnson at that time.

Nick Fury returned to draft Johnson into his so-called “Secret Warriors,” a specialized covert team of operatives to combat unique threats such as the alien Skrull invasion. As field leader, Johnson investigated Norman Osborn’s escape from a maximum security prison and even rose up the chain of command to the coveted director position of S.H.I.E.L.D. until once again shuffled aside by Maria Hill to a lesser standing in the organization. Recently, she began operating once again with the Secret Warriors.
