But as Monica and A.I.M. successfully overtook the expo and started transporting their scientists through a portal, she found herself outmatched. Though she got what she wanted, Rappaccini was captured and detained by Tigra.

Meet M.O.D.O.K.

in Tales of Suspense (1959) #94

Or, Mental Organism Designed Only For Killing. M.O.D.O.K. was a mere human guinea pig for A.I.M.’s experimentation. However, in growing the (former) George Tarleton’s brain, they underestimated his ambition’s ability to match his intellect. After exacting vengeance, M.O.D.O.K. became leader of the organization, assigning a Scientist Supreme post beneath his own. The origin continues in CAPTAIN AMERICA (1968) #133!

A.I.M. also holds an investment in exotic power sources such as extraterrestrial Nuwali and Shi’ar tech, and an ongoing interest in the Cosmic Cube. In Black Panther’s origin ish, the agency also made an illegal attempt to purify the Antarctic Vibranium (“anti-metal”) of the Savage Land!

When M.O.D.O.K. faced opposition (yet again), the rebels attempted to create another leader in S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Katherine Waynesboro. After forcibly undergoing a stint in A.I.M.’s “alteration chamber,” Waynesboro emerged as the all-new Ms. M.O.D.O.K.!

Boca Caliente

in Iron Man (1968) #207

Read through issue #210! After A.I.M. conquers the Caribbean island Boca Caliente, they rename it “A.I.M. Island” and make it their international headquarters. Possessing sovereign power, A.I.M. was able to host infamous weapons expos for Super Villain customers. Although they claimed to have abandoned goals of world conquest, these operations continued covertly.

M.O.D.A.M.

in Iron Man (1968) #296

During A.I.M.’s tenure as the world’s preeminent weapons manufacturer, the organization was led by Alessandro Brannex, although he was actually the Super-Adaptoid in disguise. It was during this same period that A.I.M. developed the Mental Organism Designed for Aggressive Maneuvers (M.O.D.A.M.), a female counterpoint to replace M.O.D.O.K.!

In her first on panel appearance, the Italian doctor and biochemist is revealed to be Carmilla Black’s (AKA the super-powered Scorpion’s) “mother,” although the teenager was raised in Vermont under a different alias. Exploiting her own daughter though genetic enhancement, Dr. Monica Rappaccini asserted herself as A.I.M.’s ruthless top dog.

Monica Takes A.I.M.

After A.I.M. is bought out by Bobby da Costa, AKA Sunspot, Monica Rappaccini joins his team at “Avengers Idea Mechanics” to help clean up the place. Unfortunately, she finds his mission misaligned with A.I.M.’s true goals, and leaves to restart the organization under its original name. She adds new members to her ranks including Amber Silverstein, AKA Seeker, Jeanne Foucault, AKA Finesse, and Brilliance!
