ALL OF WONDER MAN'S COSTUMES

As an actor, Simon Williams is no stranger to costume changes. It should come as no surprise, then, that Wonder Man has rocked several different looks since he burst onto the scene in 1964. From his red and green debut duds to his current black suit, here are all of Wonder Man's costumes (so far).

Hollywood Hero

First Costume

In Avengers (1963) #9

Acting on Baron Zemo's behalf, Simon Williams infiltrates the Avengers as a spy. Wearing a sleeveless green suit, a cowl, and a red "W" symbol across his chest, he plays the hero until a change of heart leads him to side with Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Wonder Man maintains this look through his first death, resurrection, and early adventures with the Avengers.

Beast's Design

In Avengers (1963) #161

During their time on the Avengers, Wonder Man became good friends with Beast, who designed a new costume for Simon. Beast's design modifies the original look, adding red sleeves and pants, as well as green boots, wristbands, and a yellow stripe on his cowl. Although Simon doesn't wear this look for very long, it does influence one of his later looks.

Safari Jacket

In Avengers (1963) #167

Following a moment of doubt, Simon trades his most colorful costume for a large red safari jacket paired with a black or blue turtleneck sweater, black or blue pants, and red boots. One of Wonder Man’s most recognizable looks, this costume survives pivotal points of his on-screen and off-screen careers, namely when he found success as an actor and helped form the West Coast Avengers.

Black Suit

In Avengers (1963) #253

Wonder Man hangs up his safari jacket for a black costume as he becomes more serious about his role with the West Coast Avengers. A streamlined take on his original costume, this sleeveless black suit includes a "W" symbol across his chest, fit with matching pants and red boots. This costume comes to define Simon's look for the modern era.

Hollywood Costume

In West Coast Avengers (1985) #12

Simon Williams turned to the experts for this costume. Created by film industry designers, this outfit draws inspiration from Beast's design with its green bodysuit and red accents—but adds a yellow jetpack! Needless to say, this look didn't last long, either.

Back in Black

In West Coast Avengers (1985) #25

When his colorful costume doesn't test well with the public, Wonder Man returns to his black suit, but with a few key differences. This streamlined look features Wonder Man’s classic "W" across his torso, red boots, wristbands, and a red belt with large pouches on each side. On formal occasions and casual outings, Simon also occasionally accessorizes this look with a red jacket.

Force Works Costume

In Force Works (1994) #1

After the West Coast Avengers disband, Wonder Man joins Iron Man and some of other teammates to form Force Works. Simon's Force Works costume consists of a black and blue suit with full-length sleeves. The "W" symbol on his chest stretches into red stripes and continues down his sleeves and legs. This bold new look trades red accessories in for blue gloves, boots, and belt pouches.

Energy Form

In Avengers (1998) #2

Following his death, Wonder Man's ionic energy dispersed, scattering around the greater Los Angeles area. In this form, Wonder Man’s body consists of purple energy that continuously crackles. As an energy being, Simon's eyes blaze red and he retains his iconic red "W" symbol across his chest. Even after Scarlet Witch revives him, Wonder Man frequently returns to this form, particularly when using his ionic powers.

Post-Resurrection Costume

In Avengers (1998) #12

Fully restored to life by Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man updates his classic black costume. Embellished with red piping, this black suit extends Wonder Man's "W" symbol across his chest into red stripes that cross his shoulder-length short-sleeves. He eventually removes the sleeves and belt, opting for a sleeker design.

AvengE.R.S. Squad Uniform

In Avengers Assemble (2024) #1

As a member of the Avengers Emergency Response Squad (AvengE.R.S.), Wonder Man dons the team uniform: a red and white jacket with a large Avengers symbol on the back. On top of being bulletproof and fireproof, the jackets are equipped with global-positioning systems and some first aid provisions. Simon wears this jacket over his traditional black suit during missions with the team.
