'Captain America' #2 Preview Introduces David Colton, the 21st Century Captain America
Discover how acclaimed series writer Chip Zdarsky reestablishes Steve Rogers in the modern day. Plus, the covers for 'Captain America' #4!
This week, CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 by acclaimed writer Chip Zdarsky and superstar artist Valerio Schiti finally hit stands. In this first arc, the creative duo revisit—and re-contextualize—the moment in time when Steve Rogers emerged from the ice after World War II. It's an exploration of the formative period before Steve joined the Avengers, following his journey as he learns to become a Captain America fit for the modern day.
The first issue introduced readers to David Colton, the government-sanctioned agent leading the charge as Captain America in the 21st century. Readers will learn more about this mysterious new figure as the series progresses, starting with next month's CAPTAIN AMERICA #2! The upcoming issue will see Steve and David work together on a mission that leads them into the clutches of Doctor Doom.
Alongside the preview for CAPTAIN AMERICA #2, Chip Zdarsky sat down with Marvel.com to dive deeper into the series. Read on to find out what's in store for Steve Rogers as he navigates the 21st century!

Marvel.com: CAPTAIN AMERICA #1 reestablishes when Steve Rogers emerged from the ice. How did you settle on this time period for the book?
Zdarsky: One of my favorite parts of the Captain America legend is him being a "man out of time," which becomes more so as the years go on, so that made it feel like a ripe period to tell a story. Like, back in AVENGERS (1963) #4 when he first woke up in the "modern world," it had been eighteen years since he went into the ice. Now, because of how time works in the Marvel Universe, it's more like seventy years! That makes it almost a sci-fi story for Steve Rogers, which is fascinating.
But ultimately, I wanted to tell a story of him getting the lay of the land of America and its place in the world, which is much different than when he went to sleep.
Marvel.com: At the end of the first issue, readers are introduced to a mysterious figure carrying Captain America’s shield. What can you tease about David Colton?
Zdarsky: David is a Captain America lost to time, coming to life in a post-9/11 world. And now Steve Rogers, his hero, is back and under David’s command. He’s finally meeting his hero. They say to never meet your heroes.
It’s been really challenging and satisfying working out David’s story and how a modern world and war would affect someone taking on this mantle. It’s been especially satisfying writing Steve, seeing this new world through David’s eyes, and what it means for his journey.

Marvel.com: In the series, readers will witness Steve’s first encounters with the wider Marvel Universe, from the Fantastic Four in this issue to Doctor Doom in CAPTAIN AMERICA #2. What’s it like getting to revisit and redefine these moments?
Zdarsky: Oh, super fun. Doom, especially, is a great foil for Steve, something that doesn’t get explored that often, which helps to make it fresh. Steve went to sleep fighting a madman from Europe who wanted to take over the world, and now he wakes up to see Victor Von Doom. He can’t just sit by.
Marvel.com: The first arc in this series is set in the past, whereas the next arc meets Steve in the Marvel Universe’s present day. How does Captain America's first mission against Victor Von Doom set the stage for what’s to come in the current timeline?
Zdarsky: Latveria is a problem, and Doom’s shadow is long.
