How the 'Uncanny X-Men' Are Changing 'War of the Realms'
Run through a list of the mutants mixed up in the conflict in the pages of 'War of the Realms: Uncanny X-Men'!
The X-Men are having a difficult time at the moment... Cyclops and Wolverine are guiding a ragtag group in UNCANNY X-MEN as the majority of the group has been lost to another dimension. And now in addition to that, a Ragnarok-level event has dropped on their heads: WAR OF THE REALMS.
In the event tie-in series WAR OF THE REALMS: UNCANNY X-MEN, the battle for the Ten Realms falls directly on the doorstep of the merry mutants. To see how they're handling the pressure, read issue #1 at your local comic shop now.
And here, prepare for May 22's issue #2 with a look at the squad's many connections to Asgard and Marvel cosmic...
Dani Moonstar
None of Charles Xaviers’ students have felt the call of Asgard like Dani Moonstar. Way back in 1985, NEW MUTANTS SPECIAL #1 brought the team to the planet, and once there, Dani was slowly recruited to become one of the Valkyrie. That bond has only gotten stronger over the years, which is why she was the only member of the current X-Men to heed Odin’s call to arms.
Unfortunately, Dani answered the call too late. Now, she may be the last of the Valkyrie, and unable to avenge her sisters...
Wolfsbane
NEW MUTANTS SPECIAL #1 was also a turning point for Rahne Sinclair. That’s where she met the love of her life when she was still a teenager. Hrimhari, a wolf-prince of Asgard, stole Rahne’s heart. While their time together was brief, their love was strong.
Years later, Rahne and Hrimhari had a son named Tier, who became a pawn in a power play by the would-be lords of Hell. Rahne’s friend, Guido, killed Tier and took over Hell. Although Rahne eventually forgave Guido for his actions, she’s never been the same since that loss.
Cyclops
In many ways, the connection between the X-Men and Asgard grew out of Cyclops’ actions in X-MEN/ALPHA FLIGHT #1-2. Cyclops and his first wife, Madelyne Pryor, were among the humans and mutants who were given “gifts” by Loki that essentially elevated them to godhood.
However, it came at a cost, including the spark that made them human. By rejecting Loki’s gifts, Cyclops and the X-Men made a mortal enemy.
Magik
When Illyana Rasputin was kidnapped to Asgard alongside her teammates, the Enchantress recognized her innate magical abilities as a threat. The Enchantress subjected Illyana to cruel tortures, perhaps because she realized that Magik could supplant her.
Sure enough, Illyana was on a path to become Asgard’s new Enchantress after she broke free and repaid her captor with tortures of her own.
Wolverine
Logan was among the X-Men who earned Loki’s ire in X-MEN/ALPHA FLIGHT. He was also a part of the team in UNCANNY X-MEN ANNUAL #9 who went to Asgard to rescue Storm and the New Mutants. Because of his wild nature and his nearly indestructible bones, Logan seemed to thrive in the wilder sides of Asgard.
While Logan is very much a part of the WAR OF THE REALMS conflict, he’s not with the rest of the X-Men. He’s got his own problems in WAR OF THE REALMS STRIKEFORCE: THE LAND OF GIANTS #1, since he’s on the team that’s been sent to rescue Thor.
Storm
Because she was lost to the Age of X-Man, Ororo Munroe is sitting out of the WAR OF THE REALMS...for now. But during the ASGARDIAN WARS, Loki tried to trick Storm into becoming the new Thor. A Thor that he could control. That turned out to be a bad idea, since Storm is no one’s puppet.
Still, that experience made Ororo more like a goddess than ever. Storm’s connection to her Asgardian hammer was reestablished in X-MEN GOLD before it was seemingly destroyed again.
