Rogue Confronts Her Past with the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants in Upcoming Series Preview

‘Rogue’ series writer Erica Schultz teases the trials and tribulations that lie ahead for Anna Marie. Plus, check out the cover for ‘Rogue’ #3!

You can’t outrun the past. That’s the lesson Rogue is about to learn when the skeletons in her closet come out in her upcoming solo series by Erica Schultz and Luigi Zagaria. In ROGUE (2026) #1, Anna Marie must leave behind her life with Remy LeBeau at Haven House to confront her villainous past. As her time on the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants comes back to haunt her, Rogue will seek answers from her mothers-in-crime, Mystique and Destiny.

The preview for ROGUE #1 opens with Gambit and Rogue fighting a giant possum, or as they likely call it, just another Tuesday. Ransom, one of the young mutant Outliers they’ve taken under their wing, also joins in on the action. Once the dust settles, the couple enjoys a tender moment around a fire before Rogue departs for her solo quest down memory lane. As she flies across the country to meet Mystique and Destiny, echoes of her past flash before her eyes. Sabretooth. Constrictor. Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. What does it all mean?

MARVEL: This book is set in the present, but explores a hidden part of Rogue's past. What did revisiting her time on the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants reveal to you about the character?

ERICA SCHULTZ: Rogue has been my favorite character in the Marvel Universe since I started reading comics in the late 80s and early 90s. (I'm old, I know.) To have this opportunity to add to her mythology is a great honor.

We know Rogue had a shady past with the Brotherhood, but we also know that her memories are still all jumbled. Even with the help of all the king's telepaths and all the queen's astral plane therapy, can we ever truly put Rogue back together again?

It's interesting how the mind fractures to protect itself sometimes. That's happened to Rogue with Carol Danvers and other people she's siphoned from. But what if there's something so bad that your mind basically erases almost all traces of it ever happening? Almost...

MARVEL: From Mystique to Gambit, Rogue has a supporting cast of incredibly complex characters. Is there a particular dynamic you were excited to explore in this series?

ERICA SCHULTZ: Gail Simone and David Marquez have done a fantastic job of showing the true love Remy and Rogue have for each other in UNCANNY X-MEN (2024). I wanted to make sure that Luigi and I keep that going.

Also, since Mystique has a unique status quo now [after] her solo adventure by Declan Shalvey, it's fun to see how that influences her and her interactions with Rogue. They've always had a complicated relationship, and like all mother-daughter relationships, there's some rockiness that goes along with it.

MARVEL: Without giving away too much, what moment are you most excited for readers to experience in ROGUE (2026)?

ERICA SCHULTZ: Well, I can't say what the moments are lest I give spoilers. Just know that the story shows Rogue as a real human with flaws and all. The question is... will we still love her the same when this adventure is all said and done?

Rogue's whole adult life has been in service of penance for her past deeds. She thought she'd be done with it, but some people just can't forgive or forget. Should they have to? You decide.

MARVEL: What was it like working with series artist Luigi Zagaria on ROGUE (2026)?

ERICA SCHULTZ: Luigi brings a playfulness to the moments between Anna Marie and Remy and an energy to the action. It's a good-looking book! Luigi and I got the chance to meet at New York Comic Con when ROGUE (2026) was announced. It's always nice to put a face to the line work.

Fun fact: he and I are distant cousins by marriage. Tom Brevoort didn't know this before he paired us up. Happy accidents are something!

On top of the preview for the upcoming first issue, check out the cover for ROGUE #3! What will Constrictor be able to tell Rogue about Sabretooth, and what happened at Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S.? Hopefully, it won’t cost her more than the bus fare to Chicago, but that’s never the case…
