'Ultimates' Writer Deniz Camp Kicks Off Year Two for the Ultimate Universe's Resistance Network

The Maker tried to stomp heroism out of the nascent Ultimate Universe, but the heroes of Earth-6160 are not going down without a fight. In ULTIMATES by Deniz Camp and Juan Frigeri, Iron Lad and Doom built a resistance network to oppose the Maker's tyrannical rule over their universe. Together, they fight back as the Ultimates.

For the past year, the Ultimates took advantage of the Maker being trapped in his dome to disrupt the operations of his Council. But time is ticking and the Maker's return is imminent. Now, series writer Deniz Camp sheds some light on the threat ahead as the Ultimates enter their second year of resistance.

In ULTIMATES (2024) #12 by Camp and Frigeri, the Ultimates Network regroups after a tumultuous couple of months, forever changed by the horrors and hardships they endured.

Marvel.com: When the Ultimates faced Bruce Banner in ULTIMATES #6, Iron Lad nearly died. How has this changed his perspective on the Ultimates' mission?

Deniz Camp: Dramatically. Whether that's put him (and the Ultimates) on a better or worse path, I think, is the more interesting question.

Marvel.com: ULTIMATES #13 will mark six months until the Maker’s return. What does that mean for the Ultimates as they enter Year Two?

Camp: As readers who follow the solicits will know, it's the next evolution of the book and the team — Ultimates 3.0.

I don't want to get too deep into the details—that's what the book is for!—but things change dramatically for every member of the team and the very nature of how the Ultimates operates. There is a palpable urgency to the book, as time runs out.

Marvel.com: Throughout Year One of the ULTIMATES, readers met reimagined familiar faces like Doom (Reed Richards) and new heroes like Charli Ramsey (Hawkeye). As we enter Year Two, are there any upcoming Ultimate characters you’re excited to introduce readers to?

Camp: As always, introducing new characters is a big part of the series. We've already announced Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver — and there will be another fan favorite making an appearance in that issue.

Later issues will introduce notable names and some less notable names. Plus we'll see various villains and radical groups we've introduced in the series come back into play. Year Two is wild and even more filled with ideas and earth-shattering changes than before.

Remember: This is a rescue mission.
