Hulk Is Back From ‘Ragnarok’ And Ready For Battle In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

After Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok,” Hulk has seen it all and done it all. He can even control his anger…somewhat. The Big Guy has grown and evolved, and now he’s ready to take his place on the team and fight the biggest threat in the universe, Thanos, in the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War.”

Having been mysteriously missing from “Captain America: Civil War,” we now know that Hulk had other important business to attend to, and he may be the only hero to have firsthand knowledge of the extent of Thanos’ power.

From the set of “Avengers: Infinity War,” Mark Ruffalo explained that the big green guy was just plain busy. “He went to another dimension for a little while and met up with his pal—good pal— Thor, and they went on an intergalactic buddy trip, and then he came back,” said Ruffalo. Now Hulk’s back and ready for action, “We were introduced to Thanos after doing a lot of fighting, and now he’s been brought back together with the Avengers.”

The outsider of the team, Ruffalo revealed his character’s return to the Avengers with a new sense of purpose. “Banner knows probably more about Thanos than probably anybody. He’s really trying to impress on everybody how dangerous he is. It’s a little bit of a Chicken Little (scenario). He comes in screaming bloody murder.”

“He’s seen what damage he can cause and how powerful he is,” added Ruffalo. “The entire group is in disarray so he’s also getting caught up on what’s happened here and is trying to get them to transcend their differences and impress upon them how much danger they’re actually facing.”

Banner faced a life changing experience in “Thor: Ragnarok,” which pushed Hulk’s ability to be expressive and not internalized. Those events gives him perspective on the fallout of “Captain America: Civil War.” “It’s not combative but they’re not so in sync as they were,” shared Ruffalo. “Banner doesn’t understand ‘Civil War.’ He just doesn’t get it.”

After being away on a cosmic journey for three years, Ruffalo said Hulk needs to get back into the game. “Once again, I think he’s trying to find his place in the line-up. He’s having some difficulties integrating with the rest of the group, but he’s also privy to some information that is essential for their survival.”

Hulk has been exposed to more things in the universe and is steadily evolving, even down to his speech patterns. “The division between Hulk and Banner is starting to blur a little bit. You have a Hulk that can actually express himself without being angry. There are sentences, yes. We’re getting into like a five-year-old.”

Ruffalo sees the evolution of Hulk as a character parallel to the progression of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. “Oddly enough, I joke with people that this is like doing a TV show where you shoot one episode every three years. There’s a continuity to it and when we talked about it with Marvel or Kevin [Feige], we really do talk about it as the character’s progression. I’ve been able to have a lot of say in where it goes and you’re also dealing with a new script and a new world but the characters feel like they’re making a journey. It does feel like one goes to the next and goes to the next. It feels like a long serial which is nice.”

While Stark and Banner are the Science Bros, “Infinity War” has the added element of the most technologically-advanced nation in the universe, Wakanda. Ruffalo said the team must recognize their collective skills and come together — “there’s no way to overcome what they’re facing without in some way coming to terms with their differences and embracing their diversity. That’s essentially a core value of the film and that together, only together, can they triumph.”
