Tune in Today: 'Marvel's Behind the Mask' Is Now Streaming Exclusively on Disney+

The new Marvel original documentary is now available on Disney+!

The time has arrived! Marvel's Behind the Mask, a new original documentary digging into the history behind some of Marvel's most groundbreaking characters, is now streaming exclusively on Disney+. Find out how the House of Ideas brought the stories of legends like Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and more into the spotlight -- and the lessons that were learned along the way.

Marvel's Behind the Mask

Marvel's Behind the Mask offers an inside look at what the Marvel staff had to do to adapt to a new inclusive age of storytelling. In a feature on Variety, it's noted that the documentary's director Michael Jacobs and producers Chris Gary and Ryan Simon "quickly realized in their research, the full history of Marvel’s efforts to break ground with representation — in race, gender and sexual orientation — was much richer and more complicated than just a single character."

From the very inception of comic books, secret identities have been an integral part of both Super Heroes and Villains leading “normal” lives. But it’s the characters beneath that resonate within us across generations of fans. Since the advent of the Marvel Age of Comics in the early 1960s, Marvel’s writers and artists have used the notion of identities to examine the evolving concept of equal rights. These legendary Marvel creations and stories have not only reflected the world outside our window – they have become a reflection of our own identities and who we truly are.

Marvel’s Behind the Mask will feature guests from across Marvel’s 80-year legacy, including the writers and artists behind the rise of characters like Black Panther, Miles Morales, Ms. Marvel, Luke Cage, the X-Men, Captain Marvel, and many other characters in the Marvel Universe, highlighting Marvel’s impact on pop culture and media.

Marvel’s Behind the Mask is produced by Marvel New Media with Tarmac Creative. The film is directed by Michael Jacobs and produced by Chris Gary and Ryan Simon for Tarmac Creative and Strike Anywhere. Joe Quesada, Shane Rahmani, Stephen Wacker, John Cerilli, Harry Go, and Sarah Amos serve as Executive Producers for Marvel.
