NOTE: If you haven't watched Season 2 of "Marvel's Cloak & Dagger," there are unfiltered SPOILERS ahead!

The Marvel After Show: “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” Season 2the official companion podcast, gives you behind-the-scenes insight with stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, and the rest of the cast and creators as they discuss each episode directly after it airs.

On Episode 6 "B Sides," Olivia Holt (Tandy Bowen), Aubrey Joseph (Tyrone Johnson), and Jonathan Christiansen (Music Supervisor) join hosts Lorraine Cink and Angélique Roché on The Marvel After Show to discuss the important role music played on the second season of "Marvel's Cloak & Dagger," how they choose and record music for the show, and the ways they are confronted with lives that could have been.

A soundtrack can establish a mood for a scene, for a character’s feelings, as well as guide the viewer into a deeper understanding of the story. For episode 6 in particular, Christensen said music was vital. “We wanted one song to replay," revealed Christiansen. "But in so many different contexts, version, and styles and genres.”

And for that, they went back to reference the history of the show’s setting, the city of New Orleans. “We found this song, it’s called, ‘In the Sweet By and By,'” said Christiansen. “It’s actually played at jazz funerals—a lot of it starts off somber, and then it gets more celebratory and hopeful towards the end—it’s reflective and joyous at the same time.”

As for how the actors prepare to take on the angst of their onscreen counterparts, there is definitely a playlist that fuels them. “Angry, sad girl, emo music,” joked Holt. “Just all up in her feels.”

“I’m generally a happy person, and sometimes when these scenes are very heavy and dramatic, it takes me a minute to get there,” explained Holt. “What drives me to get there is music. I find a corner on set, I put on my headphones and sit there until literally cameras are recording...then I’m there and I’m in that moment.”

If Ty had his own inner soundtrack, Joseph feels like it would change depending on the character’s situation. “When Ty’s going in to battle as Cloak—definitely some upbeat hip hop, or something like that," shared Joseph. "When he puts on his hoodie and ready to get down, it’s a different story than day-to-day Tyrone.”
