The Nature of Transactions and Sacrifices on 'Marvel's Cloak & Dagger'

Noëlle Renée Bercy and Angela Davis, as well as Gloria Reuben, join The Marvel After Show to talk about transitions and transformations.

NOTE: If you haven't watched Season 2 of "Marvel's Cloak & Dagger," there are unfiltered SPOILERS ahead!

The Marvel After Show: “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger” Season 2the official companion podcast, gives you behind-the-scenes insight with stars Olivia Holt, Aubrey Joseph, and the rest of the cast and creators as they discuss each episode directly after it airs.

On Episode 8 "Two Player," hosts Lorraine Cink and Angélique Roché spoke with Noëlle Renée Bercy (Evita Fusilier) and Angela Davis (Auntie Chantelle), as well as Gloria Reuben (Adina Johnson). In this very powerful episode, Bercy and Davis dove into Auntie’s story and how it helped Evita step into her own adulthood, while Reuben addressed the mindset of a mother driven by grief.

Throughout the series we got to see Auntie's impact on Evita's journey. The actors’ offscreen camaraderie translated well into their characters’ bond that benefited them in their onscreen relationship. With the passing of Auntie, Evita is forced to move forward making Auntie’s death especially meaningful. “Not only was it not just symbolic of Auntie sort of crossing over, but I think for Evita crossing over symbolically as well,” said Davis. “She is no longer a girl; she’s now really crossed over into her womanhood. She’s not only crossed over in terms of her connectedness to Vodun but in a much more powerful way. That crossing over for Auntie really becomes a passing of the torch.”

Davis describes the feeling as allowing a young woman to come into her own. “So much about that, in the way that we empower women, older generation to younger generation," added Davis. "At some point, we have to let them go and fly. We push them to the edge and we let them fly. And so Auntie’s crossover really becomes Evita’s first flight if you will using the analogy. And so I love that for me, for Auntie’s character, Evita gets to come into her own. This dance really is not only about the crossing over but also about the celebration.”

Pushing past death to mourning is a difficult transition. A mother’s grief is painful and powerful, and Adina is driven to desperate measures. “There’s one line that she says that is the emotional throughline for the whole series, up until now, starting from the first episode of Season One,” noted Reuben. “The one line that Adina says is, 'I just want to bury my boy.' There it is. That’s what has driven her to do everything she has done up until that point.”

Bercy knows family is deeper than blood in the world of “Marvel’s Cloak & Dagger. “Family or friends, the people that you choose are the people that you love...Fight with. Fight for. Sometimes at the same time,” revealed Bercy.
