Biography

Biography

The teenage Super Hero known as Sun Girl suits up to save the day and doesn’t leave home without her light-generating equipment, courtesy of her inventive father.

A Legacy of Light

A child of inventor Dr. Edward Lansky, AKA Lightmaster, Selah Burke grows up idolizing the wallcrawler Peter Parker, AKA Spider-Man, and wanting to be exactly like him. When she borrows her father’s inventions, which contain light-generating technology, she becomes a hero herself in New York City known as Sun Girl.

When she contracts the Carrion virus, she faces off with Superior Spider-Man (Doctor Otto Octavius, AKA Doctor Octopus’ mind in Peter Parker’s body) who uses a machine to destroy the virus, freeing her from its infection. When she’s not a Super Hero, she’s a student.

Light-Emitting Equipment

Selah possesses light-emitting equipment including a pair of gauntlets and a harness with wings that straps to her back. She claims to have borrowed her wings from her inventor father. She wears a sleek suit that bears a sunburst on the front and protective goggles. She wields handheld pistols that fire concussive blasts. After an encounter with Superior Spider-Man, he redesigned her weaponry.

Selah’s equipment also allows her to pick up police scanners, so she can fly into action where crime is being committed at a moment’s notice. She speaks English and French.

Warrior Allies and Warring Enemies

Selah teams up with Superior Spider-Man against the Masters of Evil and stops a weapon of mass destruction that she unwittingly helped create. She battles the Masters of Evil and the Wrecking Crew, and even her father, Lightmaster. Though she saves him from Superior Spider-Man’s team, Superior Six, so it’s clear that their relationship is complicated. She later joins the New Warriors and goes up against Herbert Edgar Wyndham, the High Evolutionary and stops him from wiping out all mutants.

Super Hero History

The next time Selah faced Superior Spider-Man, she was fighting the Wrecking Crew and he intervened with his team of villains, the Sinister Six who he dubbed the Superior Six. She noticed how Spider-Man sat by watching the fight play out, so she decided to do something and fought the Wrecking Crew but ended up getting knocked unconscious. Spider-Man and his Superior Six, who were somehow under Spider-Man’s control, took her away. She awoke in a lab surrounded by armed guards and let off a massive stream of energy blowing them all back. She attempted to escape, but was caught by Spider-Man and questioned about her origin and her light-generating armor. She later woke up in her Soho loft and got ready for the day, donning her Super Hero costume. She patrolled the city only to hear about a tornado near the Bowery area of NYC. She arrived to find the Masters of Evil waiting for someone. Spider-Man and his Superior Six arrived shortly afterward, with Spider-Man shocked to see her. Sun Girl fought with the Superior Six against the Masters of Evil. Using her light-powered gauntlets, she lifted an oil tanker semitruck to take out Dr. Eliot Franklin, AKA Thunderball, but the resulting explosion nearly killed her. Spider-Man chastised her for nearly getting herself killed after he redesigned her weaponry, and subsequently realized the fight was a diversion. His suspicion came true when the leader of the Masters of Evil, Lightmaster, arrived claiming a stolen quantum particle engine. Sun Girl distracted Lightmaster by truthfully calling him, “dad” and it was enough to take him down using her light powers against him. Their relation came to a shock to the Masters of Evil since Lightmaster was a white man and Selah appeared to be Black, to which Selah called them idiots for not recognizing that she was biracial. Then, upon Spider-Man’s command, she shot at the engine and it did just what he wanted it to do, it activated Flint Marko, AKA Sandman’s powers.

While Sandman caught Spider-Man, Selah saved her father from the Superior Six and got back into the fight against them, who were no longer under Spider-Man’s control. Selah then flew through Sandman’s head, which disintegrated his humanoid-sand form into dust, and she knocked out Adiran Toomes, AKA Vulture with one well-placed punch. She grabbed Spider-Man by the throat and demanded he be okay because she wasn’t sure how to stop the activated engine, which was about to destroy the whole city. Getting no help from him, she fired her handheld weapon at it which destroyed it, saving millions of people in the process. She realized Spider-Man’s role in the creation of the engine and left him while expressing disappointment that he wasn’t the hero she thought he was.

Sometime later, Selah joined the teenage Super Hero team, the New Warriors. She helped save the Morlocks from the Evolutionaries. She eventually came face to face with the High Evolutionary, who believed by killing mutants he would save the human race, in anticipation of the Celestials arriving on Earth to judge everyone. Selah blasted his machine to stop him, and stop him it did, and the New Warriors came to her aide as the High Evolutionary teleported away to safety.
