When the generation of proto-Olympian gods known as the Titans first seized power, their leader Cronus defeated and castrated their peoples previous ruler Ouranos (aka Uranus) and hurled the elder god’s severed gonads into the sea, where the foam that rose around them and took the form of a beautiful grown goddess Aphrodite, who floated to the shore atop of a huge scallop shell.
