Biography

Biography

Mutant Hector Rendoza uses his powers of transparency and transference to aid the X-Men against one of their most formidable foes.

Unrecognizable

Hector Rendoza’s mutant transparent skin manifests at age 16. When he seeks medical help, bystanders attack him, many of them neighbors who had known him his entire life fail to recognize him. Jean Grey, AKA Phoenix, telepathically halts the attackers, then recruits Hector as “Wraith” into an interim X-Men roster to oppose Genoshan ruler Max Eisenhardt, AKA Magneto’s declared war on humanity and rescue captive X-Men mentor, Charles Xavier, AKA Professor X.

Total Transparency

Wraith has transparent skin, rendering his bones, muscles and organs visible, essentially causing them to exist between visibility and invisibility. He can extend the effect to another person for a few minutes, which reverts his skin to normal, while inducing disorientation that briefly lingers after restoring those he renders transparent. He can potentially render himself, and possibly others and objects invisible. He survives being flung several hundred yards without apparent ill effect, suggesting enhanced durability. He loses his powers after the events of M-Day. Hector speaks English and Spanish.

X-Men Allies and Mutant Enemies

After his hometown neighbors don’t recognize him after his mutant transformation, they reject him for being a mutant. Phoenix rescues him and Hector allies with her new X-Men team against the master of magnetism, Magneto. While he is at first rebuffed by his teammates, he notices that Leyu Yoshida, AKA Sunpyre, is the first girl who looks at him since his mutation and did not turn away horrified. He also recognizes that she’s a bit conceited.

Happy to Help

At the X-Men’s mansion, Wraith naively tried, with little success, to break up a fight between Jean-Paul Beaubier, AKA Northstar and Paulie Provenzano, AKA Omerta. En route to Genosha, Wraith tried befriending new teammates Alison Blaire, AKA Dazzler, and Sunpyre but was rebuffed.

Once in Genosha, Magneto destroyed the X-Men’s Blackbird jet and attacked the team. During the attack, Wraith temporarily transferred his transparent skin condition to Magneto, briefly disorienting him. Although Wraith was concerned he might have injured him, Magneto quickly recovered and magnetically hurled Wraith away, but the distraction allowed Xavier and experienced X-Men to defeat Magneto. The makeshift team soon disbanded; although Wraith hoped to learn how to control his powers, he had no interest in further super-heroics. Later, he was one of the mutants who lost his powers on M-Day.
