The Complete History of the Infinity Stones: The Power Stone

What are the Infinity Stones? Like, what are they...really?

Eons ago, the six Gems (as they were then known) were an essential part of an ancient entity called Nemesis, who chose to destroy itself rather than live as the only sentient being in the universe. From its destruction came the Stones—the six key building blocks of the universe: Mind, Reality, Power, Space, Time, and Soul.

As the INFINITY WARS are raging, we decided the time was right to break down the full history of the most powerful items in the Marvel Universe...

Following our looks at the Soul Stone and the Reality Stone, next up is the Power Stone!

While much still remains unknown about the Soul and Reality Stones, those are the ones we know most about; the other four stand as even bigger mysteries! And the biggest mystery of them all may be the Power Stone.

The Power Stone allows its users to access and manipulate all forms of energy as well as enhance their own physical strength and durability. At full potential, the Power Stone can even grant omnipotence!

Notably, this jewel also boosts the effects of the five other Stones; it's like a kind of key to start the engine of the Infinity Stones as a single collective force. This function is very important, because the Stones can be unstable and hazardous when used independently. The ultimate power behind the Power Stone—and why it sits at a place of honor on the Infinity Gauntlet—does not necessarily come from the Stone itself, but from how the Stone interacts with the others. 

Having first appeared in MARVEL TEAM-UP #55, the Power Stone later appeared in the pages of SILVER SURFER, THANOS QUEST, and famously, INFINITY GAUNTLET before Adam Warlock chose to split the Gems apart. He then left the Power Gem under the watchful eye of Drax the Destroyer in WARLOCK AND THE INFINITY WATCH. 

Recently, the Power Stone appeared in the pages of GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as Drax came into contact with its cosmic power once more. He and Peter Quill discovered the Power Stone—now, strangely, exponentially larger than it's ever appeared before—before working to maintain its safety during the simmering cosmic unease in the build-up to INFINITY COUNTDOWN.

Now, the Power Stone is yet again desired by some and protected by others in INFINITY WARS, as the Infinity Watch attempt to prevent its destructive potential from reaching every corner of the Marvel Universe.
