How ‘Empyre’ #6 Leaves the Marvel Universe in New Territory

A new era for the Marvel Universe begins here!

Warning! This article contains spoilers for EMPYRE #6, so read on at your own risk, True Believers!

At last the weapons of war have gone silent, and the Marvel Universe has been saved. Al Ewing, Dan Slott, and artist Valerio Schiti put readers through an incredible ride in EMPYRE. Now that EMPYRE #6 has arrived, we know a bit more about the state of the galaxy in its immediate aftermath. Before we get to that, Earth’s heroes had to stop the Sun from going supernova while simultaneously ending the Cotati’s attempt to create a Death Spore that could kill any “animal life” they come across.

Back on Earth, Tony Stark and Reed Richards split the disasters between them. Tony sent Reed off to Wakanda with a spiffy new Iron Man suit, while Stark decided to solve the problem with the sun in his own unique way. However, a more immediate problem spilled out of the pages of FANTASTIC FOUR #21-23. The Skrull child, Jo-Venn, and his Kree counterpart, N’Kalla, were captured by the Priests of Pama, the Cotati’s human agents on Earth. Somehow, the Priests used Jo-Venn and N’Kalla’s collective memories to reignite the conflict between the Kree and the Skrulls.

The upside of temporarily shattering the Alliance was that it exposed former Skrull Empress R'Klll as the fake Emperor Hulkling. Mur-G'nn and Super-Skrull turned on R'Klll once Captain Glory confirmed that Hulkling’s claims were legitimate. That allowed Human Torch, Captain Marvel, and Wiccan to travel to the Sun and attempt to save their world. Hulkling sent Mur-G'nn and Super-Skrull to back them up, and they were able to turn the tide with an assist from Stark back on Earth.

Meanwhile, Black Panther revealed that he faked his death before confronting Quoi and his murderous father, the Swordsman. While Black Panther dueled to the death with Swordsman, Reed arrived and used his newly created armor to disrupt Quoi’s control over all plant life. As a former Avenger himself, Reed even got to say the famous call to action: “Avengers Assemble!” That brought the combined force of the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the Alliance to his position.

As this conflict played out, Jo-Venn and N’Kalla were able to jointly break free of the Cotati weapon, while Sue Storm AKA Invisible Woman pushed herself past her limits to save Ben Grimm AKA Thing and defeat the Cotati-possessed She-Hulk. Jennifer Walters’ cousin is Bruce Banner AKA the Immortal Hulk, and she proved it runs in the family by returning from her own demise. (This will be explored in the upcoming IMMORTAL SHE-HULK #1 one-shot.)

Black Panther defeated Swordsman and claimed his life, while assuring him that he was never truly the man that Panther knew as an Avenger. Even Quoi was finally overwhelmed by the assembled heroes. However, there is no redemption in sight for the Celestial Messiah. Quoi showed no remorse for his actions as he was led away, much to the disappointment of his mother, Mantis. The surviving Cotati surrendered peacefully.

Perhaps the biggest surprise to come out of EMPYRE is that the Alliance between the Kree and Skrulls has remained intact. Hulkling is still the King of Space and the ruler of two empires. Black Panther has faith in Hulkling, and the possibilities are wide open now that peace has been restored.
