'Guardians of the Galaxy' Composer Tyler Bates Talks Inspiration for the Movie Music in New ‘For Scores’ Podcast

Find out how the music from the Marvel Studios film came to life!

When you think of the songs in Marvel Studios' Guardians of the Galaxy, your mind probably jumps right to the perfectly curated soundtrack from director James Gunn. But that’s not the only music in the movie! There’s also a breathtaking score from composer Tyler Bates that adds emotion and heart to all the moments that aren’t underscored by a Top 40s hit.

In a new episode of Disney Music's For Scores Podcast, Bates talks to host Jon Burlingame about his decades-long career creating music for Hollywood blockbusters, which includes both Guardian films.

In an unusual move, Bates was actually providing some score for the film while they were still shooting, explaining that on Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, “[the actors] all wore earbuds. The score was constantly in their ear for certain sequences that I had written music for.” The earbuds were then digitally removed in post-production but the emotions from hearing the music stayed in!

Check out the clip below for a behind-the-scenes look at recording the For Scores Podcast.

For Scores is available to listen to right now, on Stitcher, Pandora, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, iHeartRadio, TuneIn, and YouTube.
