All hail the King!

Last night, Marvel Studios' "Black Panther" walked away from the 91st annual Academy Awards with three historic Oscar awards.

The billion-dollar box office success made waves when it was announced it earned seven Oscars nominations, including one for "Best Picture." While the film didn't win the top category, Black Panther's other wins were nothing short of groundbreaking.

Ruth E. Carter won an Oscar for Best Costume Design, becoming the first African American woman to win in this category. During her winning speech, Carter remarked, "This has been a long time coming."

Carter went on to say, "Marvel may have created the first black super hero, but through costume design, we turned him into an African king." She thanked the Academy for "honoring African royalty, and the empowered way women can look and lead onscreen." Carter then turned her sights onto "our genius director," Ryan Coogler, who was her "guiding force." Carter thanked Coogler for his "trust and understanding [her] role in telling the African-American story," before thanking Marvel Studios and Bob Iger because "adding Vibranium to costumes is very expensive." Moving on to the second historic win of the night, Hannah Beachler was recognized for her work on "Black Panther" with an Oscar for Best Production Design. Not only was Beachler the first woman of color to win for the category; she was the first African American to ever be recognized with a nomination. Jay Hart accompanied Beachler onstage for his role in set decoration.

Beachler shared an emotional "I stand here with agency and self-worth because of Ryan Coogler. You not only made me a better designer, a different storyteller, a better person; I stand here because of this man who offered me a better perspective of life."
